In the memo, the president suggests that soybeans should be added to their product, Wheat-O cereal, on the purpose of attracting more customers and enhancing the profit. The president proposes this suggestion based on a study which shows that people consuming soybeans at least five times per week have low cholesterol level than those who ate no soybeans. From my point of view, the memo is unpersuasive for its unsubstantial study and arbitrary assumption.
Firstly, the reliability of the study is open to question. No information is given regarding the healthy condition of the subjects, and how the study is conducted. Does it comply with the principle of random? How long the study has last? What is the exact food the subjects ate? Whether to choose subjects randomly, the time of observation, and the exact menu for every subjects( 改 subject) can all influence the result. Therefore, unless more information about the question above is given, I am not convinced with the reliability of the study’s result.
Secondly, granted the result of the study is reliable, the assumption that adding soybeans will result in fitness is highly dubious. People’s fitness involves of many aspects and is influenced by lots of factors. An adequate cholesterol level is only one factor contributing to the fitness. Furthermore, the study does not provide the initial cholesterol level of subjects; hence it is quite possible that cholesterol level of those consuming soybeans frequently is still above the adequate level while those who ate no soybeans have a cholesterol level below the adequate one. In that case[1], the addictive of soybeans to the Wheat-O cereal can not do good to people’s health, to the contrary, it will do harm to their health for it causes a high cholesterol level.
Thirdly, even the addictive of soybean is good for people’s health; there is no guarantee that the company will gain higher profit. On one hand, many factors influencing (改:influence )customers’ consuming for food product, such as taste, nutrition, and price of food and the customers’ personal habit. The increased nutrition of Wheat-O cereal does not amount to the increased number of customers. On the other hand, as a universal acknowledgement, the profit depends on the cost and revenue. To add soybeans to Wheat-O cereal certainly will lead to enhanced cost, which in turn will cast great impacts on the revenue of the product.
To summarize, the evidence provided in the memo is too weak to persuade us to adopt the suggestion of adding soybeans into the Wheat O cereal. To strength it, more study should be made to illustrate the exact function of soybeans in controlling the cholesterol level, also more specific investment, which involves the cost of the addictive of soybeans, and the consuming habit of customers, should be taken in order to ensure a rising profi
