Such non-mainstream areas of inquiry as astrology, fortune-telling, and psychic and paranormal pursuits play a vital role in society by satisfying human needs that are not addressed by mainstream science.  


Along with thousands-years development of human history, science has play more and more predominant part in human life, comparing with non-science areas’ portion is much less than before. However, non-mainstream areas still exit because they can satisfy human needs that mainstream science can not address.

Admittedly, non-mainstream could satisfy human needs by several ways like astrology, fortune-telling, psychic and paranormal pursuits, for people could gain peace and secure feeling from them. Whatever jobs he/she have or wherever he/she live, one has to face stress from all directions, like job competition with boss’ blame, increasing price of commodity whereas low salary. As suffering from those stresses, one find non-mainstream areas could help them feel better, for he/she could gain some comfort and reasons from them. For instance, one might find ways about how to relieve metal stress or anguish from astrology books, because some pieces of advice of astrology seem reasonable and actually inspire one with courage. In fact, encouraging people when they are depressing and confused is part of effect of non-mainstream subjects. However, it is not entirely due to these areas’ achievement, but some to human positive part of emotion. One might just search for an affirmative answer in terms of inquiring assistance from those areas.

In addition, it is human inborn curiosity that leads one to non-mainstream areas. The query about where one comes from and will go after death has hovering around one for thousands of years and will continue in anticipated years. And lots of phenomena are beyond the explanation of science. All these questions provide space for non-science subjects, basing on human potential mind about what is the real or even possible reason for the question. Since scared by death and hoping to continue life, someone created theory about ghost to solve the confusion and therefore comes down by generations. Nowadays, though science has been extremely developed, these queries still have no answer. Even it seems obviously unreasonable; someone would rather choose to believe it for they can gain spiritual peace from it which is more important for them.

However, while some people acquire benefit from non-science areas, others might is suffering pain from those areas. If one wallows in those theories, it is likely to trap in superstition which is not simply satisfy human curiosity and spiritual needs but damage social stability and harmony. For instance, in some remote and uncultured regions, there are often some ones who only believe in sorcery rather than scientific technology that they would buy some curses to a patient instead see a doctor. Maybe one day with the accumulation of human knowledge, we can conclude whether it is scientific.
