185. "Scandals—whether in politics, academia, or other areas—can be useful. They focus our attention on problems in ways that no speaker or reformer ever could." Is scandal a blessing or a curse? Different people from different background will give various answers. As for me, I generally agree with the speaker's assertion on the basis that scandals bring us benefits, on balance, however, its subtle disadvantages shouldn't be neglected, either. To begin with, I concede that our official supervision systems are not so perfect. Therefore, the existence of scandal contributes greatly to the supervision of our society. Consider that if our society is without scandals, what's going to be happen? Of course, people's behaviors will be lack of proper restriction and those dark facets of politics, academia or other areas can't be released out to the publics. In the last year, there is an extraordinary issue happening in the academic field. One South Korean scientist published his paper on <Science>, which is about his discovery about the stem cells cloning. When people believed that the cell biology will have a great progress, a releasing of scandal cause a dramatic uproar. What the Korean scientist discovered is counterfeit. And the official authorities gave him a severe punishment, he won't be allowed to engage in the scientific research. This also becomes a warning which is telling other scientist in this field that there mustn't be anything counterfeit in scientific research. And there is another example, Philps, a famous American swimmer, once drove his car after drinking. When the news was released, he reflected on his bad behavior profoundly and decided to give a talk to the students, telling them it’s wrong or even illegal to drove after drinking. This scandal is a lesson for Philps as well as those adolescents who are fond of him. One the other hands, however, we shouldn't ignore the disadvantages of scandals at the time we welcome its advantages with applause. Why do publics concern about scandals? Because scandals can release those issues which could cater to the publics curiosity. For example, some media will make up affairs and scandals in order to attract the publics attention. And some superstars in amusement field depend on scandals to make them be popular and known by more people, regardless of adverse effects on the society. In this condition, more people will doubt the fairness and justice of society, even will lose their sense of safety and trust. At the same time, these adverse scandals will exert great disadvantageous effect on our children. Many of the stars is the role model in the children's hearts, what they said and did will become an example for children to imitate. Therefore, it will influence the development and steady of our society. On the whole, the scandal is just like water and fire. It's a good servant, but also a bad master. It should be under control, or hazards will arise. What's more, if our society merely depend on scandals to find problems, I think our authorities are supposed to reflect on their management.
