The discussion between special education and general education has comeinto vogue recently. The speaker asserts that education will be trulyeffective only when education is specially designed for individuals. Iagree with the speaker insofar as the individual education has its ownmerits. Nevertheless, the necessity of general education cannot beneglected. On balance, my view is that the most effective education isthe compound of special education and general education.
Education specifically designed to cater(删掉) for individuals, admittedly,(删掉,下文应该是解释这句是为什么)will dig out the potentials of students. There is no denying that theinterest is not innate but cultivated in the process the education(the education process).“Genuine education”, as Socrates said (and I paraphrase), “is notinserting the stuffing of information into a person, but rathereliciting knowledge from him; it is the drawing out of what is themind”.(两个例子之间有点间隔好些,对前一个稍稍做些说明) An example comes into my mind is the ancient Chineseeducationist and thinker—Confucius. He cultivate(had cultivated?) 72 excellent studentsfrom his thousands disciples during his lifetime. The key to(of) education,as he thought, is teaching students in accordance of their aptitude. The characters, talents and interests vary from person to person. Onlyteaching them different contents with different methods to cater(不及物?, satisfy) theneeds and interests of each student, can the potentials be furthest dugout.
Nonetheless(And?和上段之间不需要转折语气吧), the general education provides students an integratedknowledge system. The truth that(truth和下文的beyond doubt用一个即可) people who accomplished in one fieldbut knowing nothing about other fields cannot meet demands of societyis beyond doubt. Some basic subjects, such as mathematics andphilosophy, do not appeal to many students, but they are supposed to bemastered by each student. A student who is specialize in literaturecannot give up mathematics, only in this way can he be equipped(武装起来的意思么...换个表述方式develop his logical thinking这样好一些吧?) withlogical thinking which is significant in analysis, evaluating andinditing literature. Similarly, a student major in science cannotignore the importance of philosophy, arts and literature. The basicknowledge of these subjects, as we know, is the foundation upon which astudent obtains different skills and moral sense. Besides, receivinggeneral education and digesting all subjects will help us achieve moreaccomplishments in the field we are interested in. For example, Vinci,a famous artist, integrated science in arts(art) and promoted arts to anunprecedented height. Due to the close relation among all thedisciplines, one cannot progress markedly without the combination ofall subjects.
The combination of special education and general education, as far as Ican see, is an effective and efficient way. When it comes to elementaryeducation, the primary duty is to construct the (students') knowledge system.Besides, in this period, student often don’t know their real interest(interests)or what they are specialized in. Thus general education is essential inthis period. While in high school, the principal mission of educationis to cultivate talented(删掉吧...) people for society. Students are supposed tochoose a specialty in which they are interested or specialized. Thecurriculums designed for students vary from specialty to specialty, from person to person. In addition, there are large numbers of electivecourses from which students could choose according to their own need(needs). Not only will the combination of special education and generaleducation conduce to the broad mental development, but also will digout the potential of students.
To summarize, special education and general education have their ownmerits, combining the two together will benefit both the students andsociety.
