Issue 175
"It is always an individual who is the impetus for innovation; the details may be worked out by a team, but true innovation results from the enterprise and unique perception of an individual."
The speaker alleges the innovation achievements only insofar as the impetus of the genius and efforts of a certain individual . I find this statement to be one-sided. It overlooks the coherent connection between individual effort and teamwork, especially in the modern world.
In the field of art and techonology, there is a lot of touching stories about the constancy and passion of certain individuals who made great effort to the development of human culture and science. One compelling evidence involves the great British scientist Faraday and his outstanding electromagnetic induction law, which came from his perspicacity and originality, which facilitate the invention of cell phone. Another notable example in favor of the individual impetus has to do with the fact that the unique perception and infectious fervor lead to the Beethoven’s successful symphony, which is appraised as the last word on human endurance. It is the same with Van Gogh, Newton, Edison, and so forth. Thus, these individuals above are all the pioneers in a certain area, who is the impetus for innovation .
Notwithstanding the foregoing hero did making great efforts and showing a convincing picture that true innovation may result from the enterprise and unique perception of an individual, we must be especially aware of the importance of teamwork, which is not only working out some plain details, but contributing every excellent fresh ideas to the whole project.
It is true that significant scientific innovations were the products of the originality of individual geniuses, yet with further exploration of these facts ,we will easily find that the familiar lonely inventors were usually accompanied by a myriad of assistant researchers, who play an vital role in the procedure. Again, Bill Gates, who was educated through independent study and found the Microsoft company unavoidably needs the innovation of each team member, project manager, programmer, user-interface designer as his career progressed. Also the forgoing great man Newton ,who wrote a book “Newton’s Principia” that had a far-reaching influence on science in the eighteenth century, only did this after his study and generalization of thoughts and works of Copernicus, Bruno, Kepler and Galileo. Clearly, innovation always comes from accumulation.
In this super-modern world, tasks are more complex, on many situations , we know that we must work in teams. It is not uncommon that scientific breakthroughs typically occur only after years of trial-and-error by large research teams. Apt examples involve the universe exploration , the study of DNA in the fields of Interdisciplines, and so forth.
Another striking example of how teamwork is essential to a new breakthrough involves the area of formula car racing. Each time, a minor advancement in the speed of the car requires increasingly keen tools for acceleration and agility. To reduce the resistance by the wind to the minimum is the domain of hydrodynamicist. By testing various new materials, it is the physicists that can choose the right ones, which can not only have certain intensity but be light enough. Besides, these advances also require increasingly sophisticated means of dynamic system, whose complex structure is designed by mechanical, electrical, and computer engineers. Even, to build and enable these technologies requires the acumen and savvy of business managers in case that ,under right administration, scientists and racers can cooperate with each other efficiently. Finally, after innovations of each part are achieved, an up-to-date car is accomplished.
To sum up, innovation results from both individual's and team's wisdom, especially in today’s scientific research and this trend will no doubt continue as more and more advancements are needed while problems will become more complex and challenging in the future.
