Does the lasting value just come from the artist, as the speaker asserts?  I fundamentally disagree with the assertion, for the reason that both artist and the critic contribute to the lasting value.

My first point of contention with the speaker involves the very notion of lasting value, which in my mind means not only art works but also something invaluable to our human beings--like the virtue. Such, I would talk about the two scale separately.

There is no doubt that, in the field of art, it is the artists, not the critics, who creates the famous works with their gifts-- the fantastic imagination, the unusual feeling to color and sound, and the painting or composing skills. For example, Mozart finished his first somphony(symphony) in his eight years, while most of us are still stepping into the school. Vinci's paintings about some machines, which show his extraordinary imagination, are still amazing in now days. Moreover, the talents are far from enough to create the famous. Opportunity and inspiration, combined with the gift, amount to the final achievement. Try to image the painting of Mona Lisa not drawn out by Vinci or lack the model of the woman herself; or the scupltuer(sculpture) of David copied by a common worker. Thus, the artists' gifts act as the base, along with chance and the spark of inspiration in the mind, which both necessarily ensure the art of lasting value.

On the other hand are the critics, who act as a bridge between the valuable and its audience. We would think no further than the experience of Van Gogh's works. The striking color of sunflower seems unwelcome and misunderstandable to the people at his age. Fortunately, thanks to the later critic, who can read out the hidden meaning in his painting and translate to the public. If there is no critic who can dig out the value, how can we expect the public discover and appreciate it? Thus, we can treat the critic as the sift for the precious but ignored art works.

In the second place are the virtues--the forever value belonging to the whole society, which are shining in both artistic and the critic. One apt example is the painting of Dove from Picasso, which gives us not only the painting itself, but also the justice, the courage, the resisting will against Fiacist(Fascist) and the desire for peace. One more example is Steven, Spielbeig(Spielberg). In one of his memior(memoir), he memorized how his talent has been discovered by one film critic-- who then proved him chances, equipments and enough freedom . All those help a lot in his further developing in film industry. In other words, it is the unknown critic who uses his unselfish to make the director.

In sum, the lasting value--no matter the art works or the virtues--is the result from the artist and the critic.
