The following appeared in a memorandum from a dean at Omega University.

"Fifteen years ago, Omega University implemented a new procedure that encouraged students to evaluate the teaching effectiveness of all their professors. Since that time, Omega professors have begun to assign higher grades in their classes, and overall student grade averages at Omega have risen by thirty percent. Potential employers apparently believe the grades at Omega are inflated; this would explain why Omega graduates have not been as successful at getting jobs as have graduates from nearby Alpha University. To enable its graduates to secure better jobs, Omega University should now terminate student evaluation of professors."

In this memorandum, the dean of Omega University recommends that in order to enable its graduates to secure better jobs, Omega University should now terminate student evaluation of professors. To substantiate his recommendation , he cites that since the Omega University implemented a teaching evaluation procedure, the students’ grade averages have risen by thirty percent, which gives employers a impression that it is the professors’ inflation that leads to the higher grade averages, and as a result prefer to hire Alpha University’s students. While, this logical conclusion suffers from many logical flaws in the correlations of each events.

First, the dean provides no evidence that Omega University’s students’s grade averages rise is due to professors’ inflation. The aim of the evaluation procedure itself is to promote university’s education. Through the procedure, the university’s evaluation and supervision system will be advanced. Therefore professors may spend more time preparing their lessons and answering the students’ questions, and students could study more efficiently. Let alone, there are also other alternative possibility which may result in the higher grade averages. For example, the examinations in that time are easier than before, or the students put more effort into their school work. Without excluding all these factors above, the dean can not convince me that there is a causal relation between the two mentioned event above.
Even assume that it is indeed the professors’ inlation causes the students grade averages rise, without futher evidence , the dean cannot draw a conclusion that the professors’ inlation is the reason of Omega University’s students’ failure in job finding compared with Alpha University’s students. It’s equally possible that Omega University is a not a comprehensive University which focus more on some theoretical subjects like philosophy , arts , sociology, on the contrary Alpha University is a comprehensieve University that provides more engineering subjects. Obviously, students in Alpha University have subject advantages in job finding and is easier be accepted by company. Or perhaps Alpha University connects many famous company and perform some job market provide many jobs for their students. Thus, the causal relationship between professors’ inflation and students’ job finding is even ungrounded.
Finally, even if all these factors is not a problem, will terminate the procedure be a effective way to secure their students better jobs? The answer is considerable, we can find a better way than terminating the procedure. For instance, the University can invite other University’s professors to score their examination paper. Or let the students make their evaluaiton before they kown their score.
All in all, the dean’s recommendation is unconvinced in that it lack of evidence to support its conclusion in many aspects. To make it more convincing, the dean should take more research and analysis on the factors I mentioned above.
