48. "The study of history places too much emphasis on individuals. The most significant events and trends in history were made possible not by the famous few, but by groups of people whose identities have long been forgotten."
基本同意原题
1, admittedly 历史研究离不开对individuals的study
a) famous few 不可替代,历史集中体现在他们身上
b) 客观原因,历史无法记住那么多common people
2, however,这些事实并非我们忘记contribution of common people的借口,离开了groundwork of common people, celebrities 无法impetus历史。时势造英雄
3, overemphasis on celebrities 会带来不少负面影响 (这一段不符合ETS论证充分的要求)
a) 如果不研究massive people, 就无法抓住the regulation of development of history(是不是太中国化了?)
b) Overemphasis on celebrities 会带来 illusion 普通人不重要
Who made these significant events and trends in history, the famous few or the groups of unknown people? With kinds of limitations, the study of history mainly focuses on these famous individuals and overlooks these common people. However, we should remember that, the history is made not only by these famous ones, but also by those who have been even forgotten.
Admittedly, the history cannot go without the study on individuals. The famous few are indispensable for these significant events and trends. It is history that chooses them to be in the limelight. The groundwork made by masses of common people concentrate on these famous few. It is them to make ultimate decisions or establish the key part of the theory system. Furthermore, people are unable to remember the detail of everyone who lived before them. The information, such as the name and job of everyone, are too numerous to be recorded. And the reason why the famous few are remembered is that they were on the front part of the stage. So the study of history could only emphasis on these individuals, not because that the historians ignore common people, but because the objective limitations.
However, the above facts cannot make us forget the great contribution of common people. Without the groundwork of common people, these celebrities are unable to impetus the history. It is Newton and Einstein who helped us to understand the world around us; it is Roosevelt and Churchill who leaded us and made the decisions to rescue world from Nazi; it is Martin Luther King who brought equal rights to Afro-Americans. But, without the results of experiments done by other scientists, Newton and Einstein were unable to come up with their theories; without the sacrifices of tens of thousands of common soldiers, Roosevelt and Churchill cannot win the World War II in themselves; without the supporters of civil rights, King’s dream would not come true. Accordingly, the true force which promotes our society to move forward is the effort of the people instead of these celebrities. If there were no Newton, Einstein, Roosevelt, Churchill and King, the history would put some other person onto their positions and they would have made the similar contributions, because in history-the great stage, when the background and the minor roles are ready, no matter who play the key roles, the plays will begain.
Furthermore, the overemphasis on celebrities may cause adverse effects. There are two compelling arguments to support this suggestion. First, a few elites cannot represent the whole group of population. And if the historians want to process a close study on a given period in history, they have to account how people lived and thought in that time. So, the study on the common people is necessary, or it will aberrant the regulation of the development of history. Second, too much emphasis on these famous few may give people the illusion that the common people are unimportant and cause the neglect of common works which are indispensable to the society .
In sum, besides the study of these famous individuals in history, we should not overlook these people who did groundwork for these heroes. Only by doing so, we can figure out the true scenes of history and better understand the regular rules behind these history events. |
