The speaker asserts that students should bring certain skepticism to whatever they study and question what they are taught instead of accepting it passively. I fundamentally agree with the speaker insofar as that students should be suspicious of what they study. Yet, excess skepticism would lead to some detrimental results.

To begin with, the spirit of skepticism would help students to absorb the knowledge which they are taught. In the modern society, the knowledge and technology are so complicated that students would not absorb them easily, if they do not suspect what they are taught. In the psychology, people usually treasure and master something which they get through hard effort, and something they just accept passively would be not arrestive to them. Furthermore, if students just recite something from their teacher like a machine, they would not really absorb the knowledge. The spirit of skepticism would make students to have the ability of thinking and analyzing some complicated things by themselves, which is one of the purpose of education. In this way, students would really improve and master some abilities, and then they would be fit for the intricate world easier.

Secondly, skepticism would conduce to discover and progress in the science. If people just accept anything passively, the society and the world would not progress rapidly and even stop. There is a compelling example which would make this point more evidently. Such as Galileo, the famous scientist, he found the fact that the earth round the sun, which may be one of the most important
discover in the human history. If Galileo give in to the theory which is acceptable by majority people and asserts that everything in the universe surrounds the earth, and he did not suspect it, the truth would be buried for longer time. And such as Aristotle suspected the velocity is same from equally height through the experiment in the leaning tower of Pisa, the fact would be suspended for long time to known by people without his skepticism. Thus, we can see that skepticism is vital to the science. It is the spirit of skepticism that human can progress endless.         

However, excess skepticism would lead to some detrimental results which we do not hope to see. Keeping the spirit of skepticism does not mean that students can be suspicious of everything and refuse to accept the classical and traditional things. Skepticism should not change to denying the contribution which is the effort of ancestors. The great scientist Newton had said: “If I have been able to see further,         it was only because I stood on the shoulders of giants.” It is the effort of forefather that makes his research and study easier and more meaningful. So, moderate skepticism would help to the discovery of science rather than doubt and refuse everything which they are taught.      

In sum, the speaker asserts that students should bring certain skepticism to whatever they study, which I fundamentally agree. And students, indeed, should have the moderate spirit of skepticism, which would meet the purpose of education and is good for the progression of society and human.
