144"Itis the artist, not the critic, who gives society something of lastingvalue."
The artist is the person who creates arts, but the critic is the person who evaluates other’s art works. It is obviously that we are likely to appreciate artists’contribution to society and at the same time we are easily to ignore the positive roles of critics who are in the overwhelming majority compared with art creators.
First of all, it is critics that teach public how to recognize and enjoy arts. Take my experience of learning abstract arts as an example. Every time I am always confused with abstract arts at the first glance. I am not a specialist in art and so it is common fact that I cannot understand the feelings which authors want to express. Consequently it seems to me that abstract arts do not attract me like objective arts. But after I read a bit about comments of abstract arts I am observing, I begin to become interested in abstract arts because critics help me to make sense of some internal meanings of the arts. Thus, without the interpretation from critics, I am afraid that I never try to probe instrict qualities of some abstract arts, not to mention enjoying them.
Secondly, the pertinent comments from critics could help studious artists improve their abilities. Positive comments could contribute to make arts become well-known and then this could encourage artists and give them more confidence. Negative comments could offer some new perspectives to artists, which sometimes could spark theirinspiration and help them strengthen their works. Moreover, critics also guide artist in some sense. By learning the real-time comments, artist could realize what kind of art will be popular at hand and the trend of arts in order to satisfy the requirement of the development of arts.
Of course, some irresponsible critics in order to satisfy certain governing class have even harmed the value of some precious works. Some critics valuate art works with the bias. This kind of behavior contradicts to the original intention of any commentaries of arts. But we hardly deny the great contribution of critics to arts only for these negative problems. Furthermore, just because critics constantly mention some works in all kind of magazines or TV programs, these works cannot forgot by public.
To sum up, critics have the same important status as artists have. Due to the existence of them, public could know sophisticated art works, artists could have motivation to create good works and those previous works become unforgettable for ever.
