Issue144 "It is the artist, not the critic,* who gives society something of lasting value." *a person who evaluates works of art, such as novels, films, music, paintings, etc.
words: 478
I agree with the speaker that artists can create many achievements which are valuable to our society, since not only they are usually skillful but also people need spiritual fulfillment. However, it should not be overlooked that the critic’s work also plays an essential role in art region.
People never stop their steps in pursuing the beauty and grace of art. From pyramids which are built by ancient Egyptians and the Great Wall which is created by ancient Chinese, to Vinci’s Mona Lisa and Beethoven’s symphonies; there are too many great artists that provide us innumerable immortal achievements. They are lasting value of the world and every individual. We can not imagine that what our lives would like if there is no art, no such artists, and no these opuses.
However, while artists’ works are admitted, it should not be neglected that critics also help artists and their works become more popular and valuable. Critics, who always own lots of knowledge about some art areas, are more professional than normal people. They can usually find the deep meanings and backgrounds of the artists’ works, which can not be realized by many amateurs. For example, when we stare at Vinci’s Mona Lisa, sometimes we claim that it is just a lady’s portrait. Nevertheless, the critic would show us the mysteries of the picture: the lady never laughed during her whole life but the moment Vinci drew this portrait; the lady had no eyebrows; what an amazing fact is that no matter which aspect you stare at her, she stares back at you… All these realities might not be realized by normal people if critics do not tell them. It is critics’ works that shift the picture more popular.
What’s more, critics’ commentaries will motivate artists to provide society more valuable opuses. On one hand, if their commentaries have a positive evaluation to artists’ works, artists would be largely encouraged and they would work harder to contribute their ability to offer more enjoyment to individuals. On the other hand, a negative evaluation would stimulate artists to improve their skills and quality as an artist. This improvement also values society, since better achievements would appear.
We can not deny the fact that some critics might be unfair for many reasons. Take movies as an example, critics might be bribed to give a positive evaluation to a movie which is not so good for the director or the studio want to gain a great office box. Moreover, some reasons such as culture backgrounds and political factors force critics to make an unfair appraisement, which is inevitable.
In sum, although artists play an important role in providing something valuable, critics’ efforts should not be neglected. They are essential in providing valuable achievements. What’s more, though some unfair evaluations come from a few critics, it is not a big deal compared to critics’ contribution. |
