Which is more important to a professional career for scholar and researchers:  a spirit of making contribution to a larger society or pursuing their own interest? The speaker tends to the latter approach even though many successful scholars attribute their success to their desiration(?) to contribute to a society or all human-beings. I strongly agree with the speaker although there calls for a balance of individual interest and social benefits.

First of all, as the old saying" interest is the best teacher " ,in this era of "information explosion", when there are too many choices that people are confronted, to follow one's own interest is the best choice. According to personal talent and experience, scholars tend to be motived in their favorite fields of research, to constrain most scholars in limited numbered realms - the fields make contribution to the larger society - is a waste of their gift. Lacking such genuine interest, or we can call it enthusiasm, it is more likely to make certain mistakes or flaws in research process.

Secondly, it is hard to say which researches can leave the society lasting value while others can not since many research had been highly praised half a century ago have been proof they do not deserve such fame. DDT was used in a large area after it was found in twenty forties until its harm was recently found and as a result it is forbidden to be used in most countries in the world. As nowadays, we are not so sure whether a invention or a discovery have potential harm, the best choice is to allow research in different areas to make what I call a “storage of second-best invention ”. Not only benefits in the present time but also a continuous development in the future should be concerned.

However, as scholars have the right to pursue their individual interest, it is entirely appropriate to assign a higher prior to researches which is more likely to found out the most rational solutions to offset current social problems existed in contemporary society. Considering what would happen if a intelligent scientist serves to terrorists and dedicates to some horrible research ,it is not hard to make a conclusion that any research which may lead to uncontrolled disasters such as cloning of human-beings or nuclear weapon should be forbidden with no doubt.

In conclusion, I expect that when making a decision about what to do, scientists have the right to follow their interest just like everyone has the right to choose their favorite clothes although some restriction such as not to harm the benefits of society should be concerned first of all.

有一些词用得不地道，句子比较绞。但是我自己也水平有限。多看看范文把。
