TOPIC: ISSUE38 - "In the age of television, reading books is not as important as it once was. People can learn as much by watching television as they can by reading books."

The speaker asserts that as people could learn as much by watching TV as reading books, reading books is not so important as it once was. However, I consist that reading books still play a vital role in our learning today.

Admittedly, the development of TV technology makes learning, at least in the first glance, appear much easier and more convenient than before. While we are watching, we are receiving information through the form of image and sound.  On the contrary, reading limits us just in the form of word by word. Thus, if the same person with the same understanding level and the same learning state, the method of watching TV to learn seems more effecient.(efficient  effective)

However, while being circumspect about the result of learning, the realistic limit and the content of the two forms, reading books has shown us its particular advantages and paramount role in the process of learning.

Firstly, we have to tell the differences between the two distinct processes--learning and receiving information. Learning is totally different from information-absorbing. While we have got information--no matter from reading or watching TV, the information itself could not automatically translate into our understandings. It is only through our thinking, analysing(analyzing) and absorbing the information that could we actually claim that we have learned what we got. On the learning side, reading could act as an pusher to us for the reason that the process we learning is the same process we force our brain to understand the abstract words. We could not read out what the books saying until we take our subjective measures. On the other hand, the advantage of TV could act as the disadvantage. For the image and sound passed to us are too detailed and subsequently too easily for us to take active thinking to understand. In such circumstance, our brains are prone to boggled down in simply receiving but not learning.

Secondly, even we have realized and thus to take activities to prevent purly-receiving(purely-receiving) instead of thinking, the contents of the two have determined that reading books are more essential in learning. On the economic side, the TV station spends thousands of dollars to edit a new series programs to focus the public attention on its channel, which could bring about the profits from advertisements. On the public side, TV acts more as an entertainment tools than as an learning facility. People just want to get something interesting and special from programs instead of the boring teaching. Thus, the two respects make up the contents of TV absorbing but lack of knowledge. On the other hand, while considering books as the mainstream tools responsible for recording and spreading the knowledge, and our ancients' achievements are only passed down in the form of books--especially the greatly abstract thinking which could not  be well-expressed in any form of image or sound, we have to admit that we could only learn the precious experience and knowledge in reading. Besides, even in morden(modern) age, books which contain various materials are widely spread and published for their cheap character. Certain minds and attitudes, or other unpopular stories--the ones could not accepted by TV station--could find their way in the form of books. And no one could make sure that in the future our descendants may dig out something precious and meaningful in their grandparents' block.(?)

In sum,   If the further development of television could bring about more contents in TV shwoing(showing), well-expression towards the abstract minds, the television may play the main role in learning.  the method of reading books are still the main way through which we get knowledge.
