So much is new and complex today that looking back for an understanding of the past provides little guidance for living in the present.

The speaker mistakenly generalizes the relationship between present and past, and claims that past provides litter guidance for living in the present due to complexity today. However, I agree with the speaker insofar that history provide no foolproof panaceas to solve lasting social ills and human suffering. The speaker unnecessarily extends his assertion to demean function of history in some aspects and deny the relevance between present and past which is unconvincing and irresponsible.

My first contention of this point with the speaker lies in the notion of more or less existed influence of history on today's society. Though we enjoy unprecedented material civilization, the main social ills are almost the same as what our forefathers faced hundreds or even thousands years ago. Such undesirable ones include violence and war, racial discrimination, legislation of morality and the like. AS to these questions history generously gives us reference, whether successful examples or disappointing debacles, and this reference do direct us a more definite way to some extent. Martin Luther King's dream call for all blacks to fight for equal right both in education and job which greatly improve black's social state. The Prohibition in the 1930s gave us a lesson that legislating morality is never the way to solve moral issues.   

My another disagreement with the speaker has to do with the situation of today's society. As the speaker describes, complexity of our society is beyond the ability of history, especially in the areas of physical science. Is it the same as the speaker asserts? Let us turn to the help of history. Newton once said 'If I have been able to see further, it was only because I stood on the shoulders of giants ', let us check those giants first. Copernicus provided the Sun-centered theory, Galileo’s method of experimenting, Kebule’s three laws on universe. Just these segments of theories in every corner in physical world make up the skyscraper of Newton’s theory on physical world. Even today's most striking theory call 'string theory' which is trying to unify the theory of quantum and wave mathematically has much relevance to forerunners on both two separated fields including Einstein, Paul and Schrodinger.

Notwithstanding,  just as I mentioned before, history provide no foolproof panaceas  to our society .So when it come to deal with new emerging social issues , history fails to provide any support. Take the issue of human cloning for example, at the beginning, this actually raises a debate even a panic among person, because this issue is never previously existed that we can find no reference from history, let alone to fully evaluation its impaction. Those ethnics eventually make a definition on it and solve such a controversial one. However, please pay attention to the reasoning of experts on ethnics, what they quoted to deal with human cloning are no longer what existed in classical textbook on ethnics, they combine this particular issue with theories as well as human's long history on its existence, so a new theory emerged.

To sum up, in some respect, especially related to social ills, no matter how complex the issue is, history really provide much guidance for them. Even in science, which is thought to be far advanced than before, today's scientists can still get inspirations and proof from the past. Though as to some particular new issues which are never happened history, the function of history becomes litter, as long as we can deal with such issues with a sense of historical thinking, history can still be our guider.
