In his argument, the author claims the preference for domestic cheeses is ever increasing, thus he suggests the stores in the chain discontinue stocking many of the varieties of imported cheese and concentrate primarily on domestic cheeses in order to gain more profit. To support this, the arguer cites data from their sail result and a survey from the magazine Cheeses of the World. Admittedly, these facts are informative to some extent. Nevertheless, the whole reasoning of this argument, suffering from several logical fallacies, is far from reliable.
In the first place, questions exist in both of the two instances. As for the sales record that the five best-selling cheeses are all domestic cheddar cheeses from Wisconsin, it is important to note that this is the data for only one month in only one newest store in the chain. Is the situation about this newest store in last month typical in all of the others for every season? So probably to open the new market, the store in this instance held commercial campaign, such as preferential prices, discounts, or largesse to advertise cheeses form Wisconsin, which reasonably resulted in increased sails.
In addition, the stringency of the survey from Cheese of the World is unauthentic in certain aspects. As we all know, a magazine often has its stance, which may undermine its impartiality in drawing final conclusions. Besides, the respondents of this survey, i.e., subscribes of the magazine, can hardly be an representative sample of all the cheese consumers for many actual causes like they may share uncommon preference for cheeses. Finally, without information about the procedure of this survey, such as how the questionnaires are designed, its credibility remains a problem.
Last but not least, even if one accepts the assumption that consumers tend to buy more domestic cheeses than imported ones, the argument is still questionable for no details are given to support the final suggestion that stop stoking oversea cheeses to increase the stock of domestic ones is the best way help to promote the profit. On the one hand, the decline of import cheeses reduces the extent of choices of consumers, so people may tend to consume less cheese since they do not have enough to select. On the other hand, in spite of simply change the stock distribution, may be many other methods better help to improve the profit level, like promotion services, control s of the costs of transportation or storage, or investment on advertising to improve its public image.
To sum up, the suggestion about the stock is one of the many potential ways to bring about higher profits for the store in chain. To make the final decision about next step, further surveys about the cheese market and the chain stores are indispensable.
