In this statement, the speaker asserts that everyone has a responsibility to obey just laws and disobey unjust laws. At first glance, it might be temping to agree with the statement, while with a prudent consideration, the statement oversimplifies the function of laws and their influence.

First of all, it is inappropriate to classify the kind of laws to just and unjust. Since different people receive different education, grow up in different environments and then rise up different value system, according to personal experiences and respective perspectives, different people may have different opinion. It is entirely possible that some laws are favored by a certain group of people while being strongly opposed others at the same time. The laws about abortion in some states may act as an apt example. In some states, abortion is forbidden while in other nations people are holding divided opinions upon it, and besides there are other people do not care about it at all. In this situation, there is not a unique answer to the question that which laws are just while others are not – to respect the freedom of the pregnant women to choose or having a more consideration of embryo’s right to live. Such problems also take place in issues about nuclear weapons and human embryo clone; it is hard to say allowing researches on these fields would bring what to us, a innovation in human society or a disaster to the whole world.

Since laws are mostly playing a crucial role in regulating our daily life, advocating resisting laws when anyone thinks it is unfair may lead to a tremendous disaster. Even in a most democratic society, laws cannot fulfill the need of everyone; every informed person who believes otherwise is envisioning a pure flawless world- a world which amounts to a complete fantasy. In most cases, laws help the society run smoothly and healthily by its function as a standard of people’s behavior such as the rule to drive in the right lane of the road or the responsibility to pay a tax to the government, anyone disobeying these laws would undoubtedly be fined and punished. A violent resisting to the laws without careful thinking may break the order of society and the dignity of laws, in a word; violence cannot solve any problems but bring chaos as a result.

However, when it comes to the history and origin of laws, we may find out that in autocracy laws are tools for dominant minority to rule the majority, when the laws are used by dominant status as the method to gain interest, everyone have a responsibility to overthrow the ruling class. Even in a democratic society, laws have their flaws, when facing such situations, certain efficient ways could be adopted such as collecting information or recommendation first and then promote the government to modify the laws. Laws should not keep constant, but to be modified ever and ever according to the development of the society.

In conclusion, no matter they are just or unjust; laws are playing crucial roles in people’s life. It is the responsibility for citizens to obey the laws to make a stable development of society; when facing laws which have flaws or are not suitable to the time, it is also the right for people to have certain opinions to protect their own benefits.
