------题目------
The following is a memo from the business manager of Valu-Mart stores.
'Over 70 percent of the respondents to a recent survey reported that they are required to take more work home with them from the workplace than they were in the past. Since Valu-Mart has not seen impressive sales in its office-supply departments in the past, we should take advantage of this work-at-home trend by increasing at all Valu-Mart stores the stock of home office machines such as printers, small copy machines, paper shredders, and fax machines. We will also increase stock of office supplies such as paper, pens, and staplers. With these changes, our office-supply departments will become the most profitable component of our stores.'
------正文------
In this memo, the author suggest in order to improve the profit of office-supply departments, they should increase stocks of home office machines as well as office supplies with accordance the recent work-at-home trend .To support his or her suggestion, the author cites the result of a recent survy to show such trends, and express his optimism toward the consequences. Close scrutiny of those evidence above, some flaws in critical respects prevent it to be persuasive and convincing.
A threshold question with the arguer involves the credibility of cited survey. Although 70 percent of respondents support the arguer’s recommendation, lacking of total amount of objectives and the occupation of that 70 percent respondents, this suggestion is still doubtful. Perhaps their sample is too small to be representative of the overall population. Or perhaps the respondents of supporting the recommendation are more willing to express their thought, as to this issue sometimes, even complaints. For that matter, the smaller the sample is, the less credible the speaker's conclusion is, let alone other potential factors should as condition of occupation and so forth.
Secondly, even there is a trend of work-at-home among employs, whether they have the necessities or wills to buy home office machines and office supplies is still a question. It is entirely possible that their work at home is merely to make further communication to potential customs even VIPs without any documentary work. It's also quite possible that even they have to deal with some documents at home, some additional work can be done later in office such as stapling, copying and printing. Either of two scenarios would lend credible hand to strengthen the arguer's assertion.
Finally, even we assume that these employs will purchase some home office machines, it does not amount that office-supply departments of Valu-Mart will experience a great increase in profit. To increase stocks means to take up more storing room, also amounts to increase the cost in storing which might offset the extra profit .Further more, even the increase is so small that contribute litter increase in profit. If so, cost on enlarging stocking of home office goods is not a wise investment, maybe some more profitable areas are more worthy investing.
To sum up, the arguer's recommendation relies on a series of unsubstantiated assumptions which weaken the strength of logic in his reasoning. To bolster the recommendation, he or she should provide more detailed information on total number of objectives in that survey and the respondents' occupations and financial condition. Moreover, he or she should prove such employs have the necessities and will to buy home office machines. To better evaluate it, a comparison between the cost of stocking and potential benefit would be favorable |
