The greatness of individuals can be decided only by those who live after them, not by their contemporaries.


It is controversial that whether the greatness of individuals can be decided by those who live after them or by their contemporaries. On balance in my view, I tent to disagree with the statement that the greatness of individuals is determined by the people live after them. However, it is not all the case. To some extent,  one's greatness and contributions to society may not be recognized by the contemporaries but be affirmed after life.

In the realm of business, one's contributions serve to play a vital role in the society and life immediately, so that the greatness of he or she can be decided by the contemporaries. People will affirm the achievements of a person who found a effective manageing and operating mode, as soon as they see benefits that the new mode makes.  Take Larry Page as an example, Larry Page is one of the two founders of google which is the first and biggest search engine on-line. Google is the significant brand of Larry Page, at the same time, Page is decided as a great person and a model by contemporaries. Moreover, considering Jiacheng Li who accumulates his wealth from the job of rag-picking, it is a household name as the top list of the richest people in China. His wisdom and brain make his achievement as a business. It is also a convincing proof that the greatness of individual can be decided by their contemporaries.

In the realm of arts, it is more possible to recognize the greatness of some artists, no matter in music, paints, or architecture. Beatles Band reaches the summit of rock and roll and is popular enough to leave its name to every person who is fund of rock and roll. Further, Monet is the founder and represent of impressionism who makes a deep influence of other painters whether in his time or after. Additionally, Frank Lioyd Wright is a remarkable architect with his masterpiece of Fallingwater which is not only a building but works of art. In spite of that, a few of artists' accomplishments do not accepted by the people all though their life, some years after, then be confirmed. It is due to that the artists are always in advance of the age which they lived.

Finally, in political realm, accordingly, most policies are so obligatory and compelling that go into effect instantly, the achievements are admitted by contemporary society. For example, Xiaoping Deng puts forward the policy of reform and opening which leads the China to the world. It is one of his accomplishments which make him as a great politician in Chinese hearts. However, it follows that a effective policy with a long term maybe not take immediate act, people do not realize its advantages and superiorities. After one decade or two even more, people are more and more aware of that.

In sum, on balance in my observation, the greatness of individuals, in most case, are determined by their contemporaries. To some extent, the achievements are admitted by the later people
