argument26.
The following appeared in a memo from the chairperson of the school
board in the town of Saluda.

"For the past five years, Mr. Charles Schade has been the music director
at Steel City High School, and during that time the school band from Steel
City High has won three regional band competitions. In addition, the
quality of the music rehearsal facilities and musical instruments at Steel
City High has improved markedly over the past five years. Because of such
successes at Steel City High, the Saluda school board should hire Mr.
Schade to plan and direct the general music education programs for the
entire Saluda school system."

过去五年中,Charles Schade担任了Steel City高中的音乐教学主任,在那期间学校乐队在三次地区乐队比赛中获胜。而且,Steel

The conclusion that the arguer claim in this argument is that the Saluda school board should hire Mr. Schade to plan and direct the general music education programs for the entire Saluda school system. To support the conclusion, the arguer point out two evidences. At first glance, the arguer’s assumption seems to be accepted, while clearly exam it, we may find that the argument is not cogent because it assumes that the certain correlation implies causation, which is not necessarily the case.

To begin with, the chairperson unfairly assumes that the three band awards were attributable to Schade’s abilities and efforts. Lacking evidence to confirm this assumption, it is entirely possible that Schade was not the school’s band instructor when the band won these awards. Or, perhaps the members of band who won all three awards are trained by outside music teachers. What is more, it was the improved quality of the band’s musical instruments and the music rehearsal facilities that should be credited for the awards. Thus, the causal relationship between the cause of the abilities of the music director and the effect of the successes of three regional band competitions is unwarranted.

Secondly, even due to the music director’ effort the band won three regional band competitions, the arguer also dose not provide enough informant on the improved quality of the music rehearsal facilities and musical instruments. In fact, these ameliorate may be waste because music rehearsal facilities and musical instruments are not using well. Perhaps over the past five years the quality of these instruments is still durable. Additionally, most students are unused for these instruments because the high school is lack of music teachers to teach these students. Therefore, improved quality is not successes at Steel City High School.

Finally, even if Mr. Schade is successful at Steel City High School, one major flaw that weakens the logic of this argument is hasty generalization for the entire Saluda school system. Different schools has its own special circumstance, thus we cannot assume that this same scenario will success in Saluda school. In face, Steel City High School may provide Mr. Schade better circumstance to prove his ability. Yet Saluda school does not provide him same circumstance such as the students of more different age (“年龄差距大,不像高中这样表达不知对不?)in entire school system , if it has middle school and elementary school, but not only in high school so that he cannot completely show his talent. In order to prove the conclusion the arguer must consider more because there are a myriad of variables in different place.

To sum up, the conclusion reached in this argument is lacking of credibility so that it is not persuasive at it stands. Regardless of who the arguer is, he or she has overlooking or chosen to ignore many aspects of the conclusion. To strengthen the argument, we would need more informants about Mr. Schade’s ability and the circumstance of Saluda school.

第二段:乐器的改善如果是不是Schade的功劳,是因为用来更换的钱不是他筹集的。而不是说没有用于教学。
第三段,我觉得除了这一点外还有两个职位工作性质的差别。领导需要把握全局的能力,但一个学校的指导就不用。
