I agree that the nonmainstream areas of inquiry as astrology, fortune-telling and paranormal pursuits is essential in our daily life, which plays an important role that can not be replaced by mainstream science through meeting special demands of people. But it is not to say that they always do good to society.
To begin with, astrology has become more and more popular in our life that some of us even can not live without them. Many of us are used to checking out our lucky number, lucky place, lucky colour and the fortune of love, career and other aspects of their constellation every week on line or by reading magazines and newspapers. This has become a part of life. We do this just for entertainment which can not be provided by mainstream science. What's more, astrology is often applied when people decide to begin a relationship with or marry someone to see whether their constellations are compatible, which has become a fashion.
Secondly, these nonmainstream areas can help people to make up for their regrets. It is often heard that some people seek a way to talk with their relatives and friends who have passed away, through which to express their love, to explain some misunderstandings or to inform the dead of their recent achivements. This kind of behavior does good to them if they will feel better and no longer live in regrets and make their life better. But it is true that some tricksters make use of those people's thoughts and thus cheat them for their money, which is undoubtedly harmful not only to those who suffered from regrets but also to the stability of society.
Thirdly, these nonmainstream areas of inquiry are sometimes made used by certain organizations whose objective is to be against society. Once innocent people become zealots of these organizations, they can not help but obey to them because the organization has controlled their minds through the nonmainstream areas of inquiry though they may claim that they are doing good to their members. For instance, the Fa Lun Gong, an organization in China, claimed that they are set up for people's health. Once taking part in the organization and doing the exercises they teach, members are required not to take medicine and to see doctor when they become ill because they are taught that the exercises can heal any diseases. Many people become fascinated in the exercises and be loyal to the organization which later demanded them to do a lot of evil things to its own interest. Thus, amounts of families broke and a number of people even lose their lives through crazy behaviors. Though the government take actions to abrogate the organization, the Chinese even the whole world will not forget the hurt it has brought to us. So are the terrorist organizations which also utilize people’s fever for them. In these circumstances, nonmainstream areas of inquiry are not satisfying people’s needs but doing harm to them.
In conclusion, those areas are significant in our daily life and can satisfy our needs to some extent which cannot be addressed by mainstream sciences, but they are sometimes harmful if people place too much emphasis on them. We should use them instead of being controlled by them.
