The speaker asserts that it is unbelievable to think that people are significantly different in different time, and the chief benefit of history study is to break down this illusion. I concede that people in different history time have the same human nature. However, many other aspects of human have changed over recorded time. In addition, the study of history also brings us other equally important benefits.

Admittedly, the carefully analysis on history tells us that human natures, such as our desires, fears and motives, are basically same from one time to the other. That is why we always face the similar social problems in different history time. For instant, crime is one of the ills born with human society. People in history have tried many methods to overcome it, but none of them attained finally success. Since crime springs from negative factors of human nature--greed, evil, cruelty, and so on--, it can not be deleted absolutely from human society.

Yet, people in one period of time do show many differences from people lived in other period of time. After all, our society continues to evolve from one history time to the other. For example, women position in society has been improved greatly over recorded history. As is well known, women were treated unrighteously in Chinese history. They had not right of remarriage after their husbands died. But in the most recent century, women's position has been improved obviously and they can share the basic democratic rights with men in current Chinese society.

In addition, we can benefit from the study of history in other aspects which are equally significant. By studying the history of World War II, we know the hurts brought to people in the involved countries and understand how vital the peace is. To learn the mistakes of war in history can help us not repeat them. By studying the history of great thinkers, leaders and other achievers who contributed much to society, we can gain spiritual courage when we face problems in our lives. By studying the history of people from different culture backgrounds, we learn to respect other traditions which differ with ourselves.

In a sum, history tells us that human nature is always stable, but other aspects of people have changed from one time to the other. To know this can help us deal with our social problems. Besides, there are other equally important history lessons which benefit our individual lives and society.
