TOPIC: ARGUMENT195 - The following is a letter from an editor at Liber Publishing Company to the company's president.

"In recent years, Liber has unfortunately moved away from its original mission: to publish the works of regional small-town authors instead of those of big-city authors. Just last year, 90 percent of the novels we published were written by authors who maintain a residence in a big city. Although this change must have been intended to increase profits, it has obviously backfired, because Liber is now in serious financial trouble. The only way to address this problem is to return to our original mission. If we return to publishing only the works of regional small-town authors, our financial troubles will soon be resolved."

红色是提纲。

In this letter an editor at Liber Publishing Company recommends that in order to turn back the financial trouble, the company should turn back to its original mission: to publish the works of regional small-town author instead of those of big city authors. To support this recommendation the editor points out the authors of big-city increased and it caused the financial trouble. This argument rest on a series of unsubstantiated assumptions, and is therefore unpersuasive as it stands.
A threshold assumption upon which the recommendation relies is that the original mission of Liber has been moved away. The letter fails to substantiate this crucial assumption. The author points out that last year ninety percent of the novels they published were written by authors who maintain a residence in a big city. This evidence has two fallows. First, it failed to tell us the rate of novels published to other books. Provided that the novel is merely a small part of books they publish, the increasing percentages of big-city author in novel can not support the assumption. Secondly, it failed in definite the concept of big-city author clearly. Does an author who maintains a residence in a big city is a big-city author? Maybe the small-town author also maintains a residence in a big city.
Even assuming that the percentage of big-city author increased, the editor relies on the additional assumption that this change was responsible for the financial trouble. However, it is entirely possible that one or more other factors were instead responsible for the financial trouble. Financial trouble may result from management, marker stratagems. Either the whole economical environments would provide an alternative explanation for the financial trouble.
Even assuming that the change of its original mission account for the financial trouble, it is no evidence to draw a conclusion that to return to their original mission can contribute to solve the problem. At the same time, other measures may also resolve this problem, to return to their original mission is not the only way.
In conclusion, the editor’s argument is logically unconvincing as it stands. To strengthen it the editor must first establish a clear causal relationship between the financial troubles and the identity of their authors. The author must also provide evidence that the financial troubles can be resolve by returning to their original mission.
