TOPIC: ARGUMENT195 - The following is a letter from an editor at Liber Publishing Company to the company's president.

"In recent years, Liber has unfortunately moved away from its original mission: to publish the works of regional small-town authors instead of those of big-city authors. Just last year, 90 percent of the novels we published were written by authors who maintain a residence in a big city. Although this change must have been intended to increase profits, it has obviously backfired, because Liber is now in serious financial trouble. The only way to address this problem is to return to our original mission. If we return to publishing only the works of regional small-town authors, our financial troubles will soon be resolved."

In this letter, to resolve the financial trouble, the editor recommends only publishing works of regional small-town authors, according to the original mission. To support this recommendation, the editor cites the fact that last year, publishing novels from city's authors, which is supposed to move away the original mission, tends to be unprofitable and further lead to serious financial trouble. From my perspective, this argument suffers from several fallacies.

First, the editor concludes that Liber’s shift to big-city author is responsible for Liber's financial trouble, based on the fact that the trouble occurred after the shift. However, the sequence of these events, in itself, does not suffice to prove that the former caused the latter one. It is entirely possible that the financial trouble is resulted from some other factors and has nothing to do with which kinds of books are published, such as the cost of publishing, management, competition from the same trade, and the whole circumstance in the book market. For instance, if more people, with the development of medium, would like to read e-books through the internet to save money and give up buying published books, it is understandable that the benefit will be diminished and profit as well. So, without ruling out such scenarios, the editor can not establish cause-and-effect relationship upon which the conclusion relies.

Second, even assuming the financial trouble is really caused by the shift of mission, the editor failed to convince me that returning to the original mission is the way to cope with the financial problem. Common senses informs me that the buyers of the books only care the content of books. If former works written by regional authors is lucrative, it is the content relevant to small-town or author’s special aptitude attracts the readers, we can imagine that changing another regional author’s books which lack of the charming will still don’t work to the case of financial trouble.

Finally, some tiny flaws will be exposed after scrutiny of this argument. Case in point, the fact the editor cited only refer to novels from city authors, which are probably only minority of total numbers of Liber’s published books, after all there are many types of literal works. In that case, changing of novel’s author appears not destructing the original mission, let alone standing as a evidence illustrating the cause of financial trouble.

In sum, to better reason the cause of financial trouble, the editor had better provides more all-sided situation involves more probable influencing factors.

1、改变任务不一定是财政困难的原因
2、转向原来的任务不一定会解决问题
3、小说可能只占小部分,不能说明改变了原来的任务,更不能说明改变任务是原因

In this letter, to resolve the financial trouble, the editor recommends only publishing works of regional small-town authors, according to the original mission. To support this recommendation, the editor cites the fact that last year, publishing novels from city's authors, which is supposed to move away the original mission, tends to be unprofitable and further lead to serious financial trouble. From my perspective(是不是最好避免这类表示自己观点的词?), this argument suffers from several fallacies.

First, the editor concludes that Liber’s shift(改变题干的句子结构,很好) to big-city author is responsible for Liber's financial trouble, based on the fact that the trouble occurred after the shift. For instance, if more people, with the development of medium, would like to read e-books through the internet to save money and give up buying published books, (反例子很丰富)it is understandable that the benefit will be diminished and profit as well.

If former works written by regional authors is lucrative, it is the content relevant to small-town or author’s special aptitude attracts the readers. We can imagine that changing another regional author’s books which lack of the charming will still don’t work to the case of financial trouble.

(感觉这段立论还能扩展说一点。比如说:作者没有提到LIBER是单单出版小说的书,可能LIBER里有其他的题材,小说只是其中的一小部分,那么90%的比例更本不算什么,也无法导致财政困能。)

In sum, to better reason the cause of financial trouble, the editor had better provides more all-sided situation involves more probable influencing factors(总结再丰满一点会更好。
