ISSUE36 - "The greatness of individuals can be decided only by those who live after them, not by their contemporaries."
这一段我的意思是不完全否定题目,只否定”only”,但这种意思似乎没有表现出来? “despite”能不能表示出这种小否定呢?还有似乎”case-by-case”给人一种要分Area写的感觉?
Could the greatness of individuals be decided by their contemporaries or only by the people who live after them? This question should be answered case-by-case instead of a hasty generalization as the speaker maintains. In my view, the people who live after can value one's greatness more intensive than the contemporaries can, despite the assessments of the contemporaries are also important.
Admittedly, the estimations given by the contemporaries are very important and often match the ones given by later generations. The contemporaries got to know the individuals by getting touch with the live people rather than just reading the stories from books, so they can observe the individuals' appearances more directly and thus their description is more real, which are the base of retrospect of people who live after. Furthermore, in some areas, such as in the realm of business or sports, the great achievement can be recognized almost immediately. When Michael John had led his term to won the sixth champion of NBA, or when Mike Welch rescue General Electric from crisis, no body will doubt the greatness of their achievements.
Unfortunately, not all the cases of human activities enjoy such convenience. Compared with the people live after these individuals, their contemporaries have many disadvantages. One may be that the great minds often exceed their understanding. Another is the numerous contemporary thoughts may flood the great mind, causing people of the certain age as deaf as try to hear under noises. For example, through years of unknown study in pea plants, Gregor Mendel, an Austrian Augustinian priest and scientist, found the inheritance of traits follows particular laws, which were later named after him now. However, when he published his paper, he received plenty of criticism. And what is worse, almost at the same time, Darwin came up with his natural selection theory, and the discussion about it soon fixed everybody’s eyes. As a result, Mendel's work did not attract contemporaries’ attention until twentieth century.
In contrast, the evaluations through retrospect have many advantages when estimate greatness. The people live after can get more information, and thus attain complete views about these individuals. Moreover, they can see the far-reaching impacts of their work after a period of time. Especially for the evaluation of political leaders, the estimation given by people who live after them can be more objective. Consider Stalin, who received infinite glorify in Soviet Union when he was living, has got a more objective evaluation nowadays.
To summarize, the evaluation by the people who live after are more acute and objective. After all, time can reveal us more details and the ultimate evaluations are always made by the people who live after.
