144 "It is the artist, not the critic,* who gives society something of lasting value." *a person who evaluates works of art, such as novels, films, music, paintings, etc. "

According to the speaker, the artist is a more important means to the social value than the critic. However, in my point of view, the author overstates the artist' s function in contributing society something of lasting value, while neglects the critic's crucial role in that procedure. I then fundamentally disagree with this claim.

To begin with, the artist indeed gives society something of lasting value. On the one hand, the artist brings people enjoyable work or spirited encouragement. For example, Vinci drew the worldwide famous painting called Mona Lisa, Chopin performed many amazing symphonies to us. On the other hand, they made the public known much deep-seated meaning of things, which are permanent value. For instance, Mark Twain, who is a famous American writer and humorist, made the public understand his idea by way of irreverent humor or biting social satire. Therefore, our masses can get lasting value from the outstanding artists.

Meanwhile, the critic, whose job is to exam and review art works, recreates the work in their own way. That procedure is often ignored or underestimated by most of people. Moreover, a critic who is familiar with a particular artist and his or her art works can help us understand and interpret art. Many permanent values were founded in this way, as a precious stone is mixed in some normal ones, maybe people will never enjoy its beauty until someone picks and shows it to us. Take Van Gogh as an example, his impressionism work could not be appreciated by later generations without the critic's commentary. Critic provides a way of discovering the deep value of the art.

Furthermore, beauty is simply founded in the in-looker's eye. That is to say, critic is often in view of a beholder, who can give the work of art by a more objective and original angle. Thus, the critic can contributes to the development of the study in the realm of arts and eventually help the author to create a better works in the future achievement.

In sum, artists and critics supplement and also rely on each other. As time passes, the perfect works with lasting value are those which are created by artists and evaluated by critics.
