I agree the speaker's statement that through mistakes can there be discovery or progress. In many aspects, such as our daily life, science, polity or military, mistakes contain a myriad of merit in term of providing people the correct direction and telling people what we should do in the next times.
I agree that the speaker is on the right philosophical side in this is issue when it comes to the realm of our daily life. Admittedly, over the span of people's grow up, we have acquire innumerable lessons form our mistakes. Just consider one child who suffers a terrible stomach because he had eaten some rotten food. This mistake affirmatively pose clear impression and lesson on him that rotten food is unsuitable to be eat. We also continue to make mistakes even after we have grown up. For example, many undergraduates fail to find his appropriate career immediately after he leave school. However, by way of making mistakes, he ultimately understands himself clearly and eventually meets his favor job. All those instances clearly demonstrates that mistakes in our every day life have the function of increasing people's experience and knowledge and making people to understand themselves completely.
We can find even more support when we turn attention to the field of socience. There is no doubt that any new inventions or breakthroughs are results of mistakes. One need look no further that the renowned scientist Thomas Edison whose invention of lamp greatly promote our society's pregress. Over 400 kinds of materials had been tried by Edison before the ultimate success came out because no one have any experience before. There is parallel with the invention of explosives which were fabricated Nobel who also had try thousands of times. The above examples indicate that only by making mistake a full and true understanding of a discovery can be achieved.
The same is true when it comes to the domain of military. One apt illustration involved the so-called "Punici War" thousands years ago between the Roman and Carthage, both of which had the ambition to struggle for the hegemony Mediterranean Sea. However, Roman which excelled in land battle were initially met great defeat for their disadvantage in naval battle. This mistake impels them to change their method of war--making ship with a bridge on the head. Consequently, during the naval battle, those ships which moved very fast can caught the enemy's ship and that the soldiers can move to their enemy's ship to lanched a "land battle". In short, this example points out the fact that in military area, mistake can make point out the disadvantage and cause people to overcome them and ultimately achieve success.
To sum up, because mistakes enable people to understand their advantage and shortcoming and point out the correct direction, it is fair to say that mistake serve to create discovery and progress.
