TOPIC: ISSUE40 - "Scholars and researchers should not be concerned with whether their work makes a contribution to the larger society. It is more important that they pursue their individual interests, however unusual or idiosyncratic those interests may seem."

I agree with the speaker's broad assertion that scholars and researchers should delicate in researches they are interested in. However, the speaker unnecessarily extends this broad assertion to embrace researches whose results are idiosyncratic, while ignoring the certain compelling aspect that resources are limited.
The implicit rationale behind the speaker's statement seems to be that scholars and researchers will work effectively in fields that fascinate them. After all, just as an old saying goes: Don't part with your interests. When they are gone you may still exist, but you have ceased to live. It has been long time accepted that interest is the best teacher and it is the original impulse to motive progress in any field. For example, when Heinrich Boll was young, he always went to the bookshop and bought a book at the cost of bearing hunger. He was interested in literature and hard-working in this way through his whole life. Eventually, he had gained Nobel Prize in literature. So, if scholars and researchers do some work in fields they are absorbed in, work will be a pleasure, and they will enjoy it.
While we should support in researchers irrespective of whether their work makes a contribution to the large society, at the same time we should be circumspect about researches whose aims are unusual or idiosyncratic and whose results are evil. After all, the essential of research is to contribute to our society and to make the world better off and craving for the unknown of ourselves or the world around us, but not just pursue these scholar’s interests. For instance, some researchers are interested in studying the technology of clone. Maybe they are curious about the results of this type of researches before they start to research. It is not hard to imagine, if they successfully clone humans, what terrible things would happen in our society. Another apt illustration is research on fortune-telling or astrology, as I see it, on a societal level these traits have led all too often to holy wars and to such other atrocities as genocide and mass persecution.
Besides, the speaker's assertion seems insofar as resources are infinite. In fact, our world is facing a big problem of shortage of resources. We must be concerned the expense of research and avoid wasting money on researches whose potential benefits are too speculative. In my view, when we do some idiosyncratic researches, we are cruelly squandering resources which could have been applied to addressing pressing problems of our society or invested in some valuable researches whose benefits are predictable and immediate.
In sum, before we invest researches, we should understand the objectives and potential benefits of them, at the same time we should be concerned researchers' interests so as to avoid squandering resources, while stimulating researchers' enthusiasm to contribute to our society.

你的论点里的说研究会收到资源有限的限制,我总觉得有点不对头,不知你怎么看?
