Issue 50
In order to improve the quality of instruction at the college and university level, all faculties should be required to spend time working outside the academic world in professions relevant to the courses they teach.
Education is becoming more paramount to society these days as a result of the rapidly changing and competitive world. A higher education level one acquired surely helps his/her stepping to a superior position, in turn a better quality of living. Consequently quality education for teenagers is one of the most concerned issues in our society. In my point of view, I fundamentally believe that college faculty could provide a better quality of education to students by closely articulating academic duties and real-world experience.
Consider first the quality of instruction is profoundly enhanced by cutting-edge knowledge and controversial issues grasped from outside professionals. It is true that college faculty gains more opportunities facing cutting-edge issues and pioneer products which might be apropos subject matters for research and publication. Besides, practical experience can boost a professor’s fame and credibility as an expert in the field. Apart from invaluable experiences griped by professor, student in fact also benefits through faculty’s lecture, conversation and project. Given that my former student’s experience as an example. He studied his final year project under a professor who worked collaboratively with outside construction companies. This was one of his frontier studies which attempted to replace conventional vibration sensor using on bridges and buildings with a latest smart material sensor. My former student ultimately mastered the knowledge of vibration control; and he works in a company which has business with railway’s company and other construction companies on reducing vibration after he graduated. He told me that he stood up among other competitive candidates as a result of his strong and relevant knowledge acquired in the project that collaborated with outside companies. In short, both college professor and student are beneficial by gaining the chance that knowing more the cutting-edge issues from outside work.
Consider next practical experience professor obtained from outside academia is allowed them assist student to learn effectively and enthusiastically. Real-world experience supplies significant and latest complement to college professor. And professor impart his/her students the information which may be abstruse and vast with an apt manner; therefore students not only learn the latest knowledge but also understand thoroughly. Furthermore, college professor bring to his/her students practical and illustrative examples of the principles and theories discussed in textbooks, thereby sparking interest, and spurring some students to pursue further study themselves. For example, a professor who specializes in materials engineering can learn about the latest technology development, application areas and its impact to human being of a certain new materials discussed in lectures.
However, I concede that not all college faculties are appropriate in this scheme. First, in certain academic areas there is very little or even no related profession in society. Consider certain examples such as physics and history which is aptly to illustrate the difficult circumstance for college professor find a job. Most of professors in these fields actually conduct research study in an institution or a national laboratory, but rather than other outside company. Second, in some academic areas, professor’s academic duties are straightly similar to practice work occurred outside academia. Typical examples are professor specialized in fine and performing arts.
To sum up, when it comes to whether college faulty should work outside academia, in professional, it is clearly true that practical and real-world experience are conducive to a better quality of education. Professor and students become more competitive in his/her field and in labor market, respectively. Also, students’ learning becomes more effective and enterprise. In a final analysis, I fundamentally concur with the author’s viewpoints except in certain academic fields.
