Some people believe that university students should be required to attend classes. Others believe that going to classes should be optional. Which do you agree with?
A university student is more freely than the high school student. S/he has a variety of choices about courses and school activities. But no matter how s/he is free, I believe that s/he should be required to attend classes. It is a basic responsibility for a student to attend classes for the following reasons: Efficiency of study and the intention of self-discipline.
It is much easier for students who go to classes to understand the principles on the courses than those who don't go to classes. Teachers on each course usually take a lot of time preparing the courses and can give some important advice about the class materials. Meanwhile, they can tell the students their experience on the related areas and add some information which can't be found out on the text books. For instance, my roommate doesn't like to go to classes and usually learn the courses by himself. He often has a lot of questions on the exercises and asks me about them. I have to explain his problems with the notes from the instructions of professors. He would solve most of his questions if he went to the classes.
Besides the efficiency, it is helpful to develop a habit of the discipline and have a regular life style. Take me as a example. If I attend classes, I may ask myself to arrive at the classroom on time. For some morning classes, it is demanding for me to get up early. It is similar to the working environment after I graduate from university. I have to arrive at the company on time and take over the tasks before the deadline. However, supposing I didn’t take the morning classes, I may develop some bad habits like the night mouse and can't get up in the morning, because I don't have the pressure to attend classes.
