We are looking for students who are academically motivated and engaged both in and out of the classroom. Students who thrive at Colgate are passionate about their pursuits and have an irrepressible spirit when it comes to reaching their goals. We are also looking for students who foster a sense of community -- students who will go out of their way to help others and help to make the campus and local community a better place for all.7 Q) q. 2. How do you evaluate those things in an application?
+ E" E% C; v0 y1 D% W0 F8 h/ W _) Q7 Q3 w$ T0 j2 y% X! e
We closely evaluate all parts of your application which includes your high school transcript, teacher recommendations, essays, extracurricular activities and standardized testing. We attempt to understand you as a student and member of your school and local community based on the information you provide. One item that is not evaluated for the application is a personal interview. Interviews are informational only and not required for the application. We understand that distance and travel costs make it difficult for many Chinese students to visit campus before they apply. Although we would love to meet you in China or on Colgate's campus, those factors are not taken into consideration when reviewing applications. We try to get our best sense of your personality, accomplishments and goals through the written information you provide in your application and the written information we receive from your teachers and advisor.

Some Chinese students send supplemental information for the application. Supplemental information is not required, and can really only be useful if it helps us to learn about you in ways that we would not already in your file. Supplements that are not particularly helpful include copies of certificates for participation in clubs and organizations, certificates for achievement, and photo journals of a student’s daily life and activities. It is just as effective to talk about your accomplishments in a concise resume and let us get a sense of your daily life and activities through the other parts of your application. You do not need to send supplements to be a successful applicant-- it can oftentimes be better to focus on the parts of the application that are required.0 ~. S: @2 z2 M. G

We want to get to know you as an individual through the application process, so do not be afraid to let your personality show! You can be candid and personal in the required essays and feel free to choose a unique topic. There is no perfect application or essay, so feel free to distinguish yourself through the required parts of the application.: j8 b, d$ q( a! g* }
, g2 Y8 v$ _, G" xThe application process is exciting and we are happy to be resources for you as you complete your application! It is fine to have family, friends and teachers offer advice as well, but ultimately all the information in the application should be your own and reflect your personality and accomplishments.

4. Will a Chinese applicant with an overseas background have any advantage over other Chinese applicants?

4 h- Y, }6 @. j8 V; x& ]We understand that attending an American college or university may be your first chance to study outside of China, and we cannot fault you for not having the opportunity to study abroad prior to the time of your application. We are simply looking for students, whether they have studied abroad previously or not, who will embrace the Colgate experience and be willing to become invested members of our community. If you have studied abroad previously, feel free to talk about that experience in your application. It is one more aspect to your application that will help us learn more about you!9 P4 I: j7 N2 p+ U
