08/04/07: Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? The next twenty years from now on, students will not use printed books any more. Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer.

In my opinion, I agree with the statement that most students will not use printed books in the next twenty years.  However, since some advantages of printed books cannot be replaced by e-books, therefore some students will still prefer to use printed books rather than e-books.
With the rapid development of new technologies, especially computer and the Internet, students have a tendency to search all the information that they need, such as reference books and background materials, through the Internet rather than in printed books.  Getting information from the Internet does have some advantages, such as convenient and efficient.  For instance, nowadays people have already established digital libraries in almost every university, some of these libraries are even connected together to form a huge information resource.  Students can get a large quantities of information very quickly in digital libraries just by tapping on the keyboard and moving a mouse, they do not need to go to the libraries in person, let alone find one printed book from numerous ones.  In sum, new technologies make it more convenient and efficient for students than using printed books, therefore students are more willing to studying on computers than to use printed books.

On the other hand, printed books have advantages that cannot be replaced by new technologies so that some students will still insist on using printed books in the future.  For example, some students like making comments and special symbols on their textbooks in order to recall relevant content in lectures.  These remarks and sighs are difficult to make on e-books, therefore printed books will still be used by some students in the next twenty years.  Moreover, some ancient and classic achievements are written on paper, and they are too fragile to be scaned in order to store in digital libraries,
therefore, students who need information from these printed books have to go to library for them.
In conclusion, with the development of our society, many newer, quicker, and more convenient approaches will be applied to gain information, therefore most of students will not use printed books in the next twenty years.  While at the same time, people cannot neglect the advantages of printed books, and some students will definitely insist on printed books.
