10/17/07: Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? University should require their students to take at least one course teaches them the culture of a country other than their own. Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer.

Should university require their students to take at least one course about the culture of a country other than their own?  In my opinion, I agree with this statement for two reasons.  First of all, acquainting culture of another country provides students more opportunities to get a job when they graduate.  Second, it helps students deeper understand their own culture, both advantages and disadvantages.
To begin with, participating a course concerning another culture can be a good idea for students to have an opportunity to be exposed to the culture and values of another nation. This understanding of exotic culture may improve the possibility to get a good job after they graduate.  For instance, an American student may difficult to find a job in a U.S. company in this fierce competitive society, but if he attended a course about Japan and its culture, or even learned Japanese language when he was in college, it is easy for him to communicate with Japanese.  Therefore he has a higher possibility to find a job in a Japanese owned and managed companies in the United States than others.  In sum, taking at least one course about another culture can actually benefits students in their future.
Moreover, learning knowledge related to another culture and values means that students have the ability to capture the essence of exotic culture so that they understand about their own culture better.  Supposing that a Chinese student takes a course about Western culture, American culture and value system for example, he learns that comparing to American culture and values, China has a much longer cultural history, and there are many advantages such as humility, thrift, and harmony should be inherited and carried forward by the present people of China.  To the contrary, he has to admit that Chinese culture has disadvantages.  For instance, many Chinese parents over-protect their kids to the extent that their children still depend on them even when they graduate from colleges.  Understanding this disadvantage in traditional Chinese culture, this Chinese student is much more likely to depend on himself later in his life and to teach his children to be independent.  In sum, taking a course about another culture can let students learn both advantages and disadvantages of their own culture.
In conclusion, I agree the statement that students should take at least one course concerning culture in another country.  These courses can benefit students not only in their career but rather a deeper understanding of students' own culture.

总的来说结构还是挺完整,开头下次要注意了. 但是个人感觉中间两段的论述不够深入,缺少具有说服力的解释,个别单词用的不是很恰当.加油~
