[分享] My FInance PhD application status

I applied thirty Universities, twenty-five in USA, one in France, four in UK, and six in Ca. I was rejected by ten universities until now. They are cornell, Iowa, Boston Uni., Indian university at Bloomington, University of Wisconsin at Madison, University of Tennessee, Warwick University, Queen's University, Univeristy of Alberta,and INSEAD. I was only offered a place by Lancaster University in it's MRes in Finance. What a shame. I think I will be rejected by all the others. How are you guys?:mad:

I hold an MBA degree from Fudan University.  Six years experience as a manager of a trade company, six years experience in Chinese stock market and one year in Hong Kong stock market. GRE 2320, GMAT 720,　TOEFL 643, although I know that all these stupid scores mean nothing.  I am thirty-three year old now.  I think I am too old to pursue a PhD degree. Actually I am completing with younger applicants. I have no academic background and no paper at all, so I think that is the main reason why I was rejected by ten universities and will be rejected by the others. After two year hard work for studying abroad, I definitely believe that all my efforts will be paid sooner or later. I am not so upset. At least I have a place to go. I can apply again next year when I finish the MRes in finance in Lancaster University. Of course I hope some universities can offer me a place the next couple of weeks.  Do not you guys think the process is really important assets for our future? In the past two years, many friends of me who ever want to go studying abroad gave up their idea. I, an old man amid you, finished the difficult tests and am persevering in an effort to complete with you. I think that is enough for me. Experienced so difficult a time, I do believe that there will be no difficulty that we can not crack. Thanks for all you guys. Wish you all receive ideal offers next week.

MBA is the best choice for you, at least I think so. You will enroll MBA program in a famous universities. Do not lose your heart!

这么强的背景出国干吗？在国内挣个二十万一年没问题吧？
我觉得想你这样的去lancaster实在是太亏了，那种学校随便申请就有admission的，太容易了。
还有我觉得你的申请学校好象参差不齐，似乎你也愿意去tennass这种学校。
我觉得象你这种背景至少也要去前三十。再往后就没意义了。

You know why Miaohong. Your background is strong, but not for PhD in Finance. Your working experience, MBA degree GRE score mean nothing for admission committee. They only care whether you have strong mathematics background or not.
You know what stanford phd of finance program recruit these years. I heard they recruit three Chinese guys, all of which have been in US for a couple of years. At least one of them is a PKU alumini and already get a phd degree in physics from MIT. Think about it. If you are not lucky this year, just forget about PhD degree in finance. You should work. You may have a really a good future in China.

Yes, I have to agree with you. Maybe I am on a wrong way, but I love to be a professor in a university. After six years work as a manager, I really hate the way to do business in China. I do not like  drinking. I hate Kala OK. I hate to see the ugly faces of govermental officials. I hate cheating. Although I am not so bad in all these aspects. I can chat with all kinds of issues. I like reading and even sitting down in the front of computer fifteen hours per day and seven days a week. I never mind working hard, but I do not want to work just for money. Although money is very important for every one. I almost aways had dinner out in the past six years, but I really do not mind food. I can have noodles every day. I have had my own apartment for six years. I do not want to tell my kid when he/she grows up that his/her father did nothing in his whole lifetime except making money. I definitly believe I can be an excellent professor, so I will try my best for my dream. Actually I do not think all the guys went to the famous university will be more successful than others who went to a middle or even low ranked university. Any way, thanks and wish you all have a good future.

Having read your opinion and those of others, I think it's because money and success in your career you've got mean nothing more valuable and precious than your pursuit of successful academics that prompts you to give up all these comforts and promising future domestically. I know keenly what you think, how you feel, and why you suffer painfully right now. So why not keep trying to apply PHD, because you have such a strong background and experience. But what i want to notify you is that maybe you should think about the shool rating behind top 30, which will ensure much more about your possibility to be enrolled. Believe me!

Your story will not persuade the AD COM that you really want to work in academia.

And you have forgotten all the math you learned, which is critical to PHD research.

Forget PHD and think about yourself what you really want.

I am moved by your words. But if the reason you chose academia is that you hate your current life. I should say you may regret sometimes later. Academia is not kind of pure and knowledge area. On the contrary, there also involves some "Guanxi" even in the States. Everybody wants to be with the great boss cause you can't publish a paper or find a good job no matter how hard you try by yourself. And those so-called research is kind of too technical. I am not sure whether people like you will enjoy working on models everyday, which has little to do with real life.
What's more important, my impression on you is that you want to change your life more than you want to do research. Anyway, I am afraid your mathematics background is not enough. Try to find something more interesting and exciting for me. Believe, PhD study is really boring.

Thank you all guys. I paid the deposit to Lancaster University by Fedex today.  If I were not accepted by one university again, I should be a student in it's MRes Finance program which is actually a preprogram for a PhD degree. The letter said that subject to achieving an average of at least 70% in the MRes I will be permitted to register a PhD in October 2004. I will try my best.

I digged it out again because it is my first message here. I would like to tell all you guys that I am admitted by not only Lancaster University into its PhD program, but also a university in Canada with a big boss. Thank you all anyway. I do know I am a kind of guy who is suitable for academic career. And the important is I will have a big boss who will be very helpful in my future study and career.

For you all guy:
