Many persons believe that to move up the ladder of success and achievement, they must forget the past, repress it, and relinquish it. But others have just the opposite view. They see old memories as a chance to reckon with the past and integrate past and present. 5 X, i- C7 W5 h9 @" o0 m$ X

Assignment: Do memories hinder or help people in their effort to learn from the past and succeed in the present? Plan and write an essay in which you develop your point of view on this issue. Support your position with reasoning and examples taken from your reading, studies, experience, or observations.0 h' v f8 @/ @: w; r. P4 Q1 t2 k

I agree to a great extent with the notion. The prompt is controversial and debatable intrapersonal issue that people face. First, I would like to adopt a rather objective and neutral stand on this topic. For the simple fact that there is no definite answer to this question, as every man has different characters and habits.

Memories work differently for people of varying characters and bring different impacts according to who the person is and also his habits. I would like to group people into two types, those carefree happy-go-lucky ones versus the more serious begrudging people. IN view of this, I feel that the latter is of the majority. Although it is always good to forgive and forget, starting a new on a fresh journey is a voice choice, I feel that only a handful can achieve the status of not being bugged by past memories. We learn from religious teachings that it is beneficial for us to let go, especially memories that we do not like. However the character and ego of most of us have made it hard for us to forget past grudges. If all beings can achieve the Buddha like character of being able to forgive and forget, it will probably put cops and lawyers of job.7 j0 n2 z% U Z# l7 K8 r6 Q

For example, as we read the newspapers, we see the crime reports and realize one thing. Most crimes like murder are committed on the basis of overwhelming grudges and horrible memories against the victim. The letting go of past poor memories of an ‘enemy’ will surely put the dispute to a rest. If only everyone can dump grievances aside, tragedies will never even happen. Luckily, there are people out there with extremely kind hearts that never hold any grudges or harbor unpleasant memories, they simply forgive and forget. That’s it.: m* Z; ?, Y8 C* P2 i

Thus, it is always good for us to forget unpleasant memories for it is the past and can never be relived. If we constantly go ahead, chances of success are much higher and us falling into grudging disputes being a lot lower.) V: p t! x* L7 z
