  It has been a controversy that whether the arts should be strictly personal or relatively social, revealing personal emotions or social opinions. Some may argue that arts reflect merely the individual world, rather than the whole society, as the artworks are created solely by the independent artists. However, no individual lives alone. Artists are constantly influenced and inspired by the time they live in, and reversely reflect and affect the world through their works of the unraveled ideas and impulses of the society.
History are filled with brilliant works that stands as the symbol of the specific eras, which serves as a mirror into both the past and the present when studied into, revealing the otherwise hidden mysteries behind the historical events. Also, artists who are experiencing the social changes are most likely to discover the hidden trends and ideas of the society as to their extraordinary acuteness of perception, discernment and understanding.
  In the field of paintings, Liberty Leading the People, the most influential and best known piece of work by the French romantic artist, Delacroix, would be the very representative example. The painting depicts an epoch-making image of the Parisians, taking up arms, marching forward under the tricolore flag and thus reveals the unremitting pursuit of freedom and liberty not only in the time of July Revolution of 1830 but also in the whole history of society. Even the paintings of artists who are less concerned of social changes and focusing on their own feelings, such as van gogh, obsessed in his own passion, finally turn out to be the significant landmarks of the culture and ideas of that time.
  In the field of music, the emergence of the various genres in music have been a result of the different impressions and conceptions toward the world. Punk rocks has been created in an age of youth rebellion, Blues has delivered the sadness and melancholy about life, and Country music has engraved our yearning for the good golden past. Popular music, no matter whether the composers and lyrists have immersed their works in their feelings about trifling personal affairs or their insightful views about the current world, has unveiled the prevailing emotional tendency.
  In the field of literature, which has been the most effective way of studying the history, it is the numerous great works of the untiring authors which enable people of the present to achieve an thorough and complete understanding of the past and thus draw the lectures for today. The Analects of Confucius has shed the ancient philosophical light on us through thousands of years. Gone With the Wind won the popularity by the struggles and beliefs in American Civil War time. Poems of Heine are marked by the especial passion and romance of his time.
  Having discussed all the above, we can safely conclude that arts are not only the production of the outstanding artists, but also the results of the specific society of different time. Thus deep investigation would reveal not only the fierce expression the individual feelings, but also the ideas and impulses of the whole society.
