TOPIC: ISSUE7 - "The video camera provides such an accurate and convincing record of contemporary life that it has become a more important form of documentation than written records."
WORDS: 633          TIME: 上午 12:44:02          DATE: 2009-1-13

According to Social Darwinism's theory, the less competitive ideas, methods and even custom will finally be superseded by some more competitive ones. Is that true when it comes to the documentation? Will the video camera finally take the place of written documents? Or, at the moment, is the video play a more important role? My answer is no albeit I agree that cameras enable accurate, convincing and objective records.

When creating a document, not only are the objective records vital, but the subjective view of the writer. The languages are so complex that they provide different words, phases and sentences to depict a certain issue, and the same words, phrase or sentence in different situation can implicit different even opposite views. When the representatives of UN are reading reports from other nation's writer, they are not merely learning the truth but understanding the attitudes, which helps them making the decisions. Moreover, the written documents can also provide the idea of panorama of a specific situation while it is quite difficult for a camera to do so, as the camera can hardly break the limits of eyes, which is shortsighted compared to written camera. So even the videos can provide the objective truth accurately, it is hard for one to make decisions as he/she does not have a panoramic understanding and the beholder's attitudes.

A written document also creates a special link between the reader and writer, which could be called the sense of identity. As a document is recorded is a specific language, only those which the ability of certain language could understand. Those people, mostly the native speaker, may enjoy the proud of its nationalism. In this regard, a written document also shows the culture to other people. Even after translation, we can still feel the beauty of culture, as it is true that we admire Hemingway's essay and Adam Smith’s economic ideas in Chinese. Set the UN as the example again, though it is a institution that objective documents are crucial, the written records does not necessarily guarantee the lose of truth, moreover the written documents provide a stage to show the culture which both benefits the sense of identity and the cultural understanding among nations. In this regard, a written document is not only the tool that we understand the issue but that we understand another culture, and this special function, though often neglected, is significant and can hardly be duplicated by the video camera method.

Admittedly, a video camera does indeed provide the accurate recording with its convenience. It enables us to get to know the details of certain matters, which cannot or is too prolix to be demonstrated by languages. That is too say the videos do have their merits, and from my perspective, those merits are also vital for us to understand and make decisions. It is also very hard to imagine that when the UN representatives are arguing on the Israel and Palestine issues, they are holding ideas only based on the papers provided by both nations without watching the truth from a screen. Thus, the video has become the major assistant for the written documents. A fairer situation is created by the video cameras. Currently, the pupils in elementary schools are also exploring the worlds via cameras, as additional to their paper books.

To sum up, the special and unique function of a written documents, the subjective view, the sense of identity accompany with the cultural showing are essential to current decision makers and civilians as a whole. Though the video cameras are more accurate and convenience, they cannot provide similar functions mentioned above but assist the paper documents to a large scale. It is too hastily to conclude which is more important but confidently assume both are complementary to each other and is important to our world as a whole.
