Although many foods are naturally rich in salicylates, for the past several decades food-processing companies have also been adding salicylates to foods as preservatives. This rise in the commercial use of salicylates has been found to correlate with a steady decline in the average number of headaches reported by participants in our twenty-year study. Recently, food-processing companies have found that salicylates can also be used as flavor additives for foods. A careful examination of this argument would reveal the flaws in several aspects. First of all, the argument fails to tell us that the salicylates have the same function in healing headache as aspirin. For instance, although salicylates and aspirin belong to the same kind of compound, however, compound is too complex to be judged, even a little difference in the structure can result in huge gap in function. And even if they have it, it is hard to know the function can still have when added in food. In addition, the evidence exists some questions. Firstly the number of participants is unknown. If there is a few participants surveyed ,the evidence will be lack of creadibility. Secondly, the fact the salicylate in food determine the decline in the average number of headaches reported by participants is open to doubt. Actually we can only found that the commercial use of the salicylates in food and the decline of the people who got headaches had a relationship on time from the argument. There are other factors should be considered. For example, most participants may have a bad eating habit which causes the headaches. They noticed that reason and began to change it during the past twenty years. Or most people had headaches due to the hard pressure from work, study and mentality. And with the increasing times they went to see the psychologist, their pressure gradually reduced therefore their headaches could be healed. These factors all could result in the same outcome, but the arguer fails to take into accountthem and wrongly treat the correlation as determining factor. Finally, the argument wrongly ignores the negative effects of the use of salicylates in food .Because the salicylates are also a kind of chemical substances that their function must be taken into deep investigation to eliminate its negative effects.
Above all, the argument is not persuasive as it stands. To convince us, the arguer should present more information and evidence about the sample surveyed ,the great benefits of salicylates in food on treating headaches and demonstrating that the salcylate in food have not any negative effects.
