People are born to fulfill goals from kindergarten to the end of lives. We struggle to graduate, to get married, to pursue satisfactions from careers. So does the society. Restropecting the history of human, the society as whole once to ensure the safety of mankind from the fierce nature, once to ensure the wealth of its civilians, once to ensure the dignities of ethnics. It seems that there always exist goals in front of us that motivate us as individuals and the society to develop, slowly, but surely. However, the means we have taken to develop varied, some are worthwhile while others are not, regardless of the worth of the goals.

Currently, individuals, the basic elements of society, are no longer worried about a safe and warm home or food issues in the western societies. People are seeking for the mental satisfactions as predicted from Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs. The self-esteem is commonly, if not always, concerned as a final goal of an individual. It does not matter how much one can earn from a specific career but how much respect one can achieve from it, mainly due to how much and how successfully one have done. People are struggling, hurts and lies happen during the competitions. Family is always ignored since one is so concentrate in the career. Here, we witness the loss of humanity. Love and forgiveness are invaluable in those people's minds. Albeit the fierce competition promote one's satisfaction, or even dignity as some argues, the means are worthless. It is never worthwhile if the humanities are abandoned.

When it comes to the society as a whole, the humanity is also vital to tell whether the method we take is worthy. Shortly after May 12, 2008, a dramatically earthquake hit southwest China which killed tens of thousand and more homeless, the society responded positively. Rescuers did not utilize any machines to dig the falling-down buildings instead of their hands, as the belief that there could still be survivors, even after 120 hours. When a girl was finally discovered after 126 hours and survived, all those efforts were worthy. The respect to life and the humanities make the means worthwhile and gorgeous. The human history seems a history of wars and fights. People fight for different goals, for the belief, for monetary issues and even for a lady. All those goals are reckoned worthy while all those means are not and unnecessary. Why the Israel and Palestine fight against each other, which cause deaths everyday? Why the government troops and rebels in Congo fight against each other? Is that impossible that both sides could sit side by side to tackle the disputes? All the sacrifice of innocence civilians are worthless. The disrespect of life can never be a worthy means even the goals of ethnic's dignity or religious belief are worthy.

Thus, it seems if the means obey the rules of humanities, it is a worthy one. However, the truth is not that simple. Ma jiajue, a college students that killed his roommates was sentenced to death even he was fight for his dignity, thus his humanity. Through people feel sympathy to him, as according to Adam Smith's theory, the approval or disapproval to a human is whether we sympathize or fail to sympathize with him, we tend to approve his actions, not the legislations, which is so holy that cannot be challenged? In this regard, the worthy means should also follow the laws even the humanities are challenged. There should exist other better method to fight for the dignity of oneself instead of killing, depriving other's humanities as well.

In sum, as goals exist during our lives, the history of mankind, it is even more crucial to choose the means that we take to achieve the goals. Under the permits of laws, the humanity is the vital issue that we decide the worth of certain means. Even costly they could be, a humane method is always worthy. Otherwise, we should not take the means through the goals are worthy.
