TOPIC: ARGUMENT51 - The following appeared in a medical newsletter.

"Doctors have long suspected that secondary infections may keep some patients from healing quickly after severe muscle strain. This hypothesis has now been proved by preliminary results of a study of two groups of patients. The first group of patients, all being treated for muscle injuries by Dr. Newland, a doctor who specializes in sports medicine, took antibiotics regularly throughout their treatment. Their recuperation time was, on average, 40 percent quicker than typically expected. Patients in the second group, all being treated by Dr. Alton, a general physician, were given sugar pills, although the patients believed they were taking antibiotics. Their average recuperation time was not significantly reduced. Therefore, all patients who are diagnosed with muscle strain would be well advised to take antibiotics as part of their treatment."

In this newsletter, the author claim that the all patients who are diagnosed with muscle strain should be well advised to take antibiotics as part of their treatment. To support this, the author points out that the secondary infections may keep some patients from healing quickly after severe muscle strain. Base d on the hypothesis, the author also cites an experiment containing two groups of patients who treated by different doctors and different medicine. Careful examination each of these evidences, however, reveals that none of them lend credible support to the conclusion.

To begin with, the hypothesis that secondary infections may keep some patients from healing quickly after severe muscle strain does not necessarily indicate that all patients with muscle strain would suffer secondary infections. Perhaps only severe muscle strain would cause this problem and for other type of muscle strain, the antibiotics would be of no effect. Thus, without ruling out such possibilities, the author can not convince that the patients with muscle strain would have secondary infections which antibiotics can be used to treat.

What is more, even if all patients with muscle strain would suffer secondary infections, the experiment between two groups with different doctors and treatment has little indication that the reduction of average recuperation time is due to the antibiotics. Lacking such evidence it is equally possible that Dr. Newland, who specializes in sports medicine, has used some other better treatment such as massage and proper exercise except antibiotics, which Dr. Alton does not use, who is just a general physician and these other type treatment help reduce the average recuperation time.
Besides, even if the doctors use the same treatment, the patients in these two groups may be different. Perhaps the patients in the second group have much more severe muscle strain than the patients in the first group so that the average recuperation time was not significantly reduced in the second group due to their more severe conditions but not antibiotics. Since the author fails to account for alternative possibilities, it is unconvincing that the significant reduction of average recuperation time is due to the antibiotics treatment.

Finally, even assuming that the antibiotics can treat the muscle strain, the author provides no credible evidence that all patients with muscle strain should take antibiotics. Perhaps other medicines can also cure the muscle strain and maybe have better effect than antibiotics. Moreover antibiotics may have side effects so that some patients can not take. Lacking such evidence, it is unfair to get the conclusion that all patients with muscle stain should take antibiotics.

In sum, the author can not support his or her recommendation that all patients who are diagnosed with muscle strain would be well advised to take antibiotics as part of their treatment. To better support the argument, much more evidence should be provided such as the relation between secondary infections and muscle strain. I would also need to know if the patients and treatment, except the antibiotics treatment, are the same and the average recuperation time .
