TOPIC: ARGUMENT197 - The following appeared as part of a recommendation made by a faculty member to the president of a large university.

"Never once in our 150-year history as a university have we clarified our objectives. How, then, can we hope to adapt as an institution to the new challenges facing higher education. As a first step in this evolutionary process, therefore, we should send out questionnaires asking faculty members why they teach, asking students what they want from this university, and asking former students what they gained from their own education here. When the replies come in, we can tabulate them and formulate an official statement of our educational mission. This will surely result in improved programs at our university."

In this argument the arguer points out that on the base that since never once has the  university clarify its goals, to adapt the institution the university must sent out questionnaires to ask the teachers and students as well for some questions. However I find this solution is both unnecessary and unrealistic for solving the problems.

First, never clarify the objectives is not equal to not accomplishing the goal of the university. As we can see, the function of the university is to train students and carry out researches. Unlike social groups such as companies and charities, the university itself may not need a clear objective.

Even clarifying the objects is necessary; sending out questionnaires is not useful to solve this problem. Considering that it is the school broad who conduct the survey, perhaps the faculty members may not dare to tell the truth aboveboardly. As for the students, the ungradulated may not really know what they want from the school for lacking social experience, and the graduate’s' opinions may differ a lot according to they own experience. Thus the idea of sending questionnaires may not be a good one.

Even sending out questionnaires works, it may not result in improved programs at our university. Perhaps it refers to some questions that the schools alone can't solve: Low wage lead to lacking good teachers, the overall quality of the students is falling, the funding of the university is not enough to carry out researches. Without considering these factors we can’ simply expect an improved program.

In conclusion, considering these factors the action of sending out questionnaires may not work. To better strengthen the argument we must know that to be a better university a clear goal is needed, and there are other solutions besides sending out questionnaires to investigate. Also the school it self can find ways to solve the exist problems.
