【标题】 Argument51 The following appeared in a medical newsletter. "Doctors have long suspected that secondary infections may keep some patients from healing quickly after severe muscle strain. This hypothesis has now been proved by preliminary results of a study of two groups of patients. The first group of patients, all being treated for muscle injuries by Dr. Newland, a doctor who specializes in sports medicine, took antibiotics regularly throughout their treatment. Their recuperation time was, on average, 40 percent quicker than typically expected. Patients in the second group, all being treated by Dr. Alton, a general physician, were given sugar pills, although the patients believed they were taking antibiotics. Their average recuperation time was not significantly reduced. Therefore, all patients who are diagnosed with muscle strain would be well advised to take antibiotics as part of their treatment."
1. The arguer fails to show us that the conditions of two groups of patients are same.
2. Even though above assumption are true that conditions of two groups of patients are same, the representiveness of the patients studied is open to doubt.
3. The arguer rules out other factors which will result in the reduction of recuperation time.
4. it can hardly demonstrate the secondary infections could have the same influence on usual muscle strain as on severe muscle strain。On the other hand, the arguer also does not neglect the possibility of the negative effect of the antibiotics.
In this argument, the arguer provides a study of comparative groups of patients under different treatment to convince us that all patients who are diagnosed with muscle strain would be well advised to take antibiotics as part of their treatment. However, some flaws undermine the reliability of argument .Here as followed.
Firstly, the arguer fails to show us that the conditions of two groups of patients are same. In this case, it can hardly conclude that the antibiotics are the primary factor which causes different time on which two groups of patients recover well. For instance, in group one, most patients are young and energetic .On the contrary, in group two, most patients are old and weariness .Its possibility of the negative effect of the antibiotics. It is likely to conclude that recuperation of group one is less that that of group two because of the age and the vitality.
Secondly, even though above assumption are true that conditions of two groups of patients are same, the representiveness of the patients studied is open to doubt. The number of the patients studied and the way to choose them are unknown. Only survey a few patients’ conditions and not choose them haphazardly, could undermine the credibility of argument.
Thirdly, the arguer rules out other factors which will result in the reduction of recuperation time. For instance, as the argument states, the doctors who heal two group of patients are different, which one is doctor who specializes in sports medicine and the other is a general physician. The difference in ways of curing and other medicine except for antibiotics may cause the different time of recovery.
Fourthly, even though the study can proved that secondary infections may keep some patients from healing quickly after severe muscle strain, it can hardly demonstrate the secondary infections could have the same influence on usual muscle strain as on severe muscle strain. The arguer hastily draws the conclusion but fails to provide us evidence to test it. On the other hand, the arguer also does not neglect the possibility of the negative effect of the antibiotics.
Above all, the arguer fails to demonstrate a casual relationship between secondary infections and the time of recuperation. To make it logical and acceptable, the arguer should demonstrate that antibiotic can diminish the time of recovery on most patients who suffer from the severe muscle strain .Additionally, the arguer have to provide more facts that the antibiotic have same function on patients who are diagnosed with general muscle strain and to eliminate the possibility of the negative effect of the antibiotics.
