Argument Task 1 Argument94
94The following appeared in a memo from the president of Bower Builders, a company that constructs new homes.
"A nationwide survey reveals that the two most desired home features are a bathroom with a whirlpool tub and a large kitchen. Homes in a nearby development built by our competitor, Domus Construction, have whirlpool tubs and have sold much faster and at significantly higher prices than the average. To increase our sales and profits, we should include whirlpool tubs and larger kitchens as standard features in all our new homes. Since our recent buyers have voiced no complaints about small yards, we can also increase profits by decreasing the size of our yards."

正文:
In this argument, the president claims that his company should include whirlpool tubs and larger kitchens in all their new homes in order to increase profits. This claim is based on a nationwide survey revealing that whirlpool tub and a large kitchen are most desired most desired home features. To further support it, he use the good selling situation of Domus Construction as an example. He also states that their profits could increase by decreasing the size of yards. Reasonable as it seems to be, a careful examination would reveal how groundless it is.
First, the survey it based on is not representative. Bower Builders may have its own market targets which taste of home is different from that of national wide. Perhaps they are busy workers with low incomes, thus don’t have much time to cook and can not afford such expensive house. Therefore, a national survey can’t apply equally to Bower Builders. Indiscreetly making decision according to such survey, there would be a disaster waiting for them.
Second, the argument assumes that owning whirlpool tub and large kitchen is the only for Domus Construction’s better performance in selling. There maybe other factors influence its selling, such as better after sell service, effective advertisement, and perfect management.
Only focus on whirlpool tub and large kitchen may lead them neglect other factors which may be the true reason for increasing profit.
Third, the strategy the president advocates can bring more profit is unwarranted. The profit is the function of cost and revenue. There is no evidence that the additional income that such strategy bring about could overcome the expense on installing whirlpool tub and building large kitchen. If not, the company can’t experience the profit as the president predicted to be.
No complaint about small yards shows that buyers are possibly satisfied with the current size. It could not be figured out that customers will accept the coming size smaller than before. Some residents may abandon these house because of this. Rather than increasing profits, decreasing the size of yard may result in the decline of profits.
In the sum, the president fails to support what he claims. In order to be convincing, a survey among its special market target should be made and the real reason for why Domus Construction is profitable should be find out. To make it more reasonable, he should ensure whether the expense the strategy involved could impinge the increased income. Last but not least, the current policy should not be abandon hastily.
