The following appeared in a memo from the president of Bower Builders, a company that constructs new homes "A nationwide survey reveals that the two most desired home features are a bathroom with a whirlpool tub and a large kitchen. Homes in a nearby development built by
our competitor, Domus Construction, have whirlpool tubs and have sold much faster and at significantly higher prices than the average. To increase our sales and profits, we should include whirlpool tubs and larger kitchens as standard features in all our new homes. Since our recent buyers have voiced no complaints about small yards, we can also increase profits by decreasing the size of our yards."
In this memo, the president asserts that all our new homes should contain whirlpool tubs and larger kitchens. To bolster his or her suggestion, the president support a nationwide survey shows that the whirlpool tubs and large kitchens are desired by most of people, and the experience of their competitor, Domus Construction(DC). The president also cites that because there is few complaints about small yards that we can increase our profits by decreasing the size of our yards. Although it seems reasonable at first glance, however, further scrutiny of each of these reasons, the suggestion become unconvincing as it stands.

To begin with, the president claims that we should construct a whirlpool tub and a larger kitchen in our new houses in order to increase our profits based on a nationwide survey. We cannot, however, deduce the claim from the nationwide survey. Firstly, it is unwise to put a nationwide rule into the specific area. Perhaps people in this area do not like their home with the whirlpool tub and kitchen, it is entirely possible they are fond of the department. Then even when they like such kind of house, will they actually buy it. As is known to us all, houses with a larger kitchen and whirlpool tub must be more expensive than other common houses, the residents may cannot afford the house.

In addition, the president fails to take into account other possible reasons why the recent buyers have no complain about small yards. We are not informed the price of the houses with small yard, perhaps the price decrease with the size decrease. Therefore, the buyers have no complaints. Or they are not complain just because the company do not conduct such a survey, and they have complain to their friend for many times.


Finally, we cannot assert that the houses built by DC which sell faster and with higher price just due to the house have the big kitchen. To become a best seller much more factors should be considered. For example, where the houses are built in. Maybe DC's houses are built in the prosperity area where the transportation is convenient. Or the quality of their house is better than others. Perhaps their design is so good that the customers are willing to buy it with a higher price.

To sum up, the president provides not enough evidence to make it a reasonable suggestion. To strength the suggestion, more information about the house, the market and the two companies should be.
