TOPIC: ISSUE147 - "Tradition and modernization are incompatible. One must choose between them."
WORDS: 714 TIME: 01:00:00+00:15:00 DATE: 2009/1/30 21:54:07
Bedfellow or rival? When faced with the relationship of tradition and modernization, some people acclaim that for its conservative and obsolete connotation, tradition should give way to the modernization, while others are prone to devise an elaborate plan to shift the meaning of tradition to adapt modernization. Nonetheless, as the line of demarcation between tradition and modernization is not so strict, the essential issue might not be how to differentiate them or whether one should choose between them, but how could human beings utilize the advantages of both. That relationship, as is demonstrated below, could be regarded as "two aspects of an approach" instead of ”two ways to different destinies".
Apparently, the modernization, including modern technology, science, facilities, and other actions as a result of social progress in recent years, is to serve as the catalyst for global development. Empirically, no advanced ideology could be established, nor any high-tech instruments or tools could be invented without the impulse of modernization. Relating to our lives intimately, for its irreplaceable function, modernization elevates its position in human common sense, and eclipses the tradition. Admittedly, global society and economy in modern era could be an extreme impact to the culture traditions both because the social competitive circumstance results in a tendency for people to be materialistic and spiritual hedonistic, and the economic environment overwhelms this "conservative and outdated" tradition to build a wealth-oriented ideology. Nonetheless, such phenomenon by no means illustrates that tradition will be eliminated in the future. Existing as a moral standard, instead of being forgotten, tradition could influence modern society and individuals more than ever before.
So what is the contribution of tradition to modern world? The answer is: mental support. Whenever people endeavor to distinguish the beneficial and detrimental aspects of an affair or an ideology, common sense and conscience would be their first consultant. They commence judging whether it is just or not, afterward they consider the profits. Undoubtedly, that common sense, conscience, and the definition of justice all stem from the education and social influence, which are regarded as another form of expression of tradition, in childhood and adolescent of an individual. Eternal and universal as it is, tradition could be carried forward by every single person; and widely accepted and acknowledged, it will never vanish.
Considering as opposite directions, some people may argue that modernization is taking the place of tradition for it offered visible and corporeal benefits. However, they failed to realize that in most cases, tradition and modernization can not merely co-exist, but also absorb their advantages and discard their disadvantages to promote the development of each other. Being regarded as the most wonderful one in the history, remarkable and impressive as it is, the medal of 2008 Summer Olympic Games, for example, possesses a unique design of a ring of jade as symbols of virtue and nobility in Chinese traditional culture. That perfect combination of modern technology and tradition definitely demonstrates that they are not competitor, but cooperator. Existing in our lives in a particular pattern, tradition thus could never be replaced by modernization.
Another problem is, when they do have contradiction, which direction should people tip the scales in? Since modernization commits mainly to the extrinsic action or thought whereas tradition stands for the mental and moral standard, as are mentioned above, the decision is obviously: human beings should choose the one represents the inherited, established, or customary pattern of social custom and common justice. Widely outcrying over disrespect, an advertisement campaign commissioned by Nike, which featured the American basketball player LeBron James slaying a dragon, for instance, was immediately banned by the Chinese government by reason of the Chinese people regard themselves as "Descendants of the Dragon". Seldom do human beings grant that tradition is amid everyone’s blood orally, but morally and ethnically they do.
Complex and controversial situation as it is, while concerning the advantages of modernization are now excessively exaggerated, people are always put their emphasis on technology, economy, politics, or laws to pursue better individual development. Nevertheless, social development could never be expedited rapidly when citizens failed to establish a correct attitude toward traditions. Only taking modernization as the engine, and tradition as the helm, the ship of "human progress" could thus be steered to the destination of human expectation. |
