17"There are two types of laws: just and unjust. Every individual in a society has a responsibility to obey just laws and, even more importantly, to disobey and resist unjust laws."

The author contends that competition, an indispensable impetus for the development of the society, in most cases, imposes negative rather than positive effect. I agree with the statement when it comes to the morality decline a malicious competition might bring to the human beings, nevertheless, I contend that the author unfairly overlooks the true nature of competition, as well as the contributions it has made to all walks of life.Admittedly, few would disagree with the opinion that the exultation and the sense of acknowledgement brought by competition, especially the intensive competition whose competitors are elites of the field, far outweigh any other sort of delight. However, it is due to the excessive focus on the result of competitions that people’s innate appetite for authority, jealousy and even malign intrigue to deliberately prevent others from succession easily betray themselves. For example, continual competitions in business field will cut off the cooperation and coordination between companies, which may further lead to stagnancy of each unit and unethical marketing practices; desperate competitions among students for higher grades in education undoubtedly stand in their way of growing into well-rounded and well-informed citizens; furious competitions in political campaigns may generate the worst result, leaving candidates cherish nothing but individual interests, totally deviating from their duty and mission to defense democracy and equality for the public. In short, no issue is more disputative than the effect of competitions, because no issue is as basic to human beings’ psychological needs as competitions.Aside from the negative effects, commonsense tells us competitions, whether in natural or social level, mainly serve as catalyst. First consider the biosphere, a place in scientists’ observation competitions find ample evidence. The fact that many ancient species extinguished for the sake of their poor surviving skills in the face of invasion of new species or natural catastrophe is the basis upon which establishes the Darwinism, a classical theory paving the way for the truth that the more adaptable and competitive you are, the longer and better you can make your life. Moreover, the species diversity and the evolution of human race in itself suffice to substantiate the positive effects of competition, without which we human beings are quite likely to be the ape men or certain kind of amphibian living ignorantly and inferiorly.Next consider the human society, where most of the discoveries and progress are the products of proper competitions for the purpose of improving citizens’ living standard, raising industrial productivity and facilitating the technological advances. One telling example is The Nobel Prize and The Pulitzer Prize, respectively representing the most honorable awards in science and journalism. And it is undeniable that winners of these two prizes are the most talented individuals whose competency brings themselves reputation and human beings benefits. Also, in current affairs, competition on the basis of equilibrium is in accordance with globalization, entailing competition to achieve the most optimized allocation of resources. To sum up, it is the connotation of competition to cultivate human beings to become autonomous, creative and inquiring individuals who have intelligence and courage to change our destiny. Although in some cases, competition can cause grief, depression, and even commotion, the crucial role it plays in contemporary world far outweighs its neglect effects. After all, competition is the key words of our time, a time centering around globalization, efficiency and optimum choice.
