48. "The study of history places too much emphasis on individuals. The most significant events and trends in history were made possible not by the famous few, but by groups of people whose identities have long been forgotten."   历史研究过于关注个人。历史上最有意义的事件和潮流能够成为可能不是因为几个少数的名人而是一些身份早就被淡忘的人群。

The speaker claims that too much attention was attached to individuals in the study of history and it is the group of people whose identities has been forgotten instead of famous few made the mostsignificant events and trends in history. As far as I am concerned, I agree that the history study places too much emphasis on individuals. Yet the most significant events and trends in history were both made by famous few and groupof people.

To begin with, the fact that individuals are placed much emphasis in the study of history lies in two aspects. On the one hand, the history document took record few main persons on behalf of othersin writing down history events. Lacking the sufficient information about the exact events in history makes the history researchers have no choice but to paymost attention to the individuals. It is the history record deficiency that leads to that phenomenon. One the other hand, the individuals are truly responsible for the significant events. We must admit that some talents createthe significant events in history. A case in point is that James Watt, a singleman, who invented the first steam engine which provoked the first industrial revolution. Moreover it is Einstein who put forward Theory of Relativity and also gave a perfect interpretation of the photoelectric effect. It isShakespeare, who created the greatest English Literature. In short, history researches mainly focus their research on individuals due to the inadequate history record and prominent individual contributions.

However, the masses play a pivotal role in history,making the most vital events and trends in history. The development of history progressed due to the accumulation efforts of populace. For example, in the science real many scientific findings are a result of collaboration and not the individual contribution. Although in some cases they may bear the name of theperson who first published them, as in 'Darwin's theory of evolution'. Moreover in the American Revolution, groups of people rallied and attempted to gain independence from British Empire. Through efforts of groups instead of few individuals, American Declaration of Independence has been achieved. The common people made the history development and contributed themselves to the momentous events and trends in history.

Finally, both famous few and populace are the impetus of history. Famous few provide the driving force behind the accomplishment and the populaces bring the vision into fruits. For example just as mentioned above, although Watt invented the first engine steam, it is the industries which put the steam engine into production line that caused the first industry Revolution. Another supporting example is that Churchill was an eloquent speaker and his lecture encouraged the British soldiers to fight bravely in thewar. Yet without the soldiers’ endeavors, the British will not win the final battle. In all the victory of British owes to excellent leader Churchill andthe brave British army. These examples above can illustrate that history millstone is the result of both excellent few and populace.

In conclusion, individuals and common people both contributed enormously to the significant events and trends inhistory. The research of history places great importance on individuals due to some inadequate history information and the outstanding leadership of some talents.
