所以提示词是curse。前面都是好的方面，后面急转之下，那么描述努力的词应该是ineffectual 无效的

这道题目由widespread public shock可以看出引起这个普遍shock的news肯定不是被埋没的，埋没的就不会被大众知道，从而引起普遍的质疑，所以排除B。第一个空格应该选一个shock的广义上的同义词，所以可以知道第一个空格不会是正评价，所以可以排除C；由于shock这个词，我们可以知道修饰两种news的成分即第二个空格加上acquittal应该和guilty verdict构成反以重复，所以第二个空格和acquittal加起来表达的正评价，故排除A和E，所以这道题选择D。
