The speaker asserts that all nations should help support the development of a global university designed to engage students in the process of solving the world's most persistent social problems. I agree with the point that we should reinforce international cooperation on some of the world's most persistent social problems and engage some students in the process of solving them. However, in my opinion, to let all nations help support to initiate such a university where students are all involved in global affairs is not a wise move due to several flaws.
To begin with, I have to confess that to solve the world's most persistent social problems, which are often global affair calls for the cooperation among all nations. Much of the world's most persistent problems, like the ozone hole, economic regression, regional conflict and so forth involve most of the nations in the planet. Each thoughtful man will think it futile if the United States paying to solve global warming while India is emitting more and more carbon dioxide during its development of industry. Therefore to cooperate is a necessity and, admittedly, engaging young students from different nations to communicate with each other and work together to solve global problems is a great idea.
However, should we involve all nations into supporting to develop a global university designed specifically to engage students in the process of solving the world's most persistent social problems just to attain this aim? I do not think so. Even though we get a meaningful goal to do so is not a proper mean. Such a university is not good for youth to develop their value system, their view of the world or their sense of belonging. Studying in such an university is unable to give students a well knowledge of their own nation's conditions, and make students all major in this politic-like subject seems to be too single. Lack of exchanging ideas with students in other field can produce narrow-minded students - who obviously not appropriate for solving global affairs.
Besides, to initiate such a university goes with certain problems. Like the UN cannot decide independently such a university will surely cause a competition among those sovereign nations. After all, it is a powerful weapon to control, or simply to influence the young minds. In addition, there is no doubt that students who go to such a university are all elites of the nations. Attracting the best brains into political affairs will certainly undermine the research of natural science, which can greatly increase social productivity and contribute a lot in removing poverty. It is not wise to let this happen because poverty is the source of many worldwide social problems.
Finally, let all nations help to support the development of such a university is not realistic. Much of the nations in the world are developing countries and some of them even still have famine. To give up multitudes' benefits to support elites' education cannot solve global social problems, and on the contrary, will bring about riots - one of the world's most persistent social problems. In my point of view, these countries have their main aim to develop their economy and industry in order to solve the problem of poverty, which is a main source of regional conflict and other world's problems.
In sum, to let nations cooperate in solving the world's most persistent social problems is a great idea, as well as engage young students in the process of solving them. However, to let all nations help support the development of a global university designed to achieve these is not appropriate. It will cause more problems than solve. We human beings still need to find other ways to solve worldwide problems.
