'The way people look, dress, and act reveals their attitudes and interests. You can tell much about a society's ideas and values by observing the appearance and behavior of its people.'

In order to have a deep understanding of certain socity's ideas and values, one usually have to engage in research on many respects and even experience it for oneself. However, I believe that the appearance and behavior of people do dispose the character of their chulture to some extent.

Generally speaking, people who belong to different countries or culture dress in various styles, which demonstrate diversity and colorfulness of the world. First, traditional costume of a nation is a symbol of its culture passed and improved by generations. The most vivid example is that in a muti-nationality country such as in China, each minority has its own unique style of traditional costume by which you can distinguish a nation with ease. Secondly, people with distinct religious and moral standards tend to present appearance accordingly. For example, Arab is a country relatively conservative and women's position are far low than the male's in the history. Naturally, the male have stong objection on women who display their bodies in public; that is why all conventional Arab women are wearing long white dresses from head to toe to cover themselves up. In contrast, in America, people admire girls who wear bikini nowadays because in their eyes these girls are sexy and confident. Though bikini was controversial and even banned when invented at the beginning, its popular acceptance among the women will attribute to nothing more than the Americans' free minds. The third point has to do with a country's overall temperament. For instance, the french dress romantically; the American dress colorfully; While the Japanese dress formally.

Moreover, changes in people's dressing style coincide with changes of a socity. This is especially true in China. In the 60s or 70s, when frugality is extensively encouraged, the austere colors such as blue,black, grey took up absolute predominance in the people's dressing. At that time, the most fashion style for the young is wearing the old green uniforms without the badge and cap cockade, armed with brown bar on. In the early 80s, with the gradual deepening of the reform, the country door is opened and various new things spring up. Bell bottom pants, flower shirts, aerobics pants, shirt bats, such exotic costumes emerged and rendered the homeland people dizzy. In the eyes of self-doubt, the people gradually shifted their perception on dress and recognized that dress is not a nature of class. When people began to pursue styles and colors in line with personnal character, an era of diversified and muti-color clothing formally arrived. In a instant, we encounted the 21st centry. Nowadays, with respect to dress, the Chinese people concentrate more on its menifestation of individuality and fineness of materials than its basic function of keeping warm.

Admittedly, due to the the influence of globalization and commercial propagation, people tend to have analogous favors on dressing manners. On some senior occasions, uniformed garments are required. For supporting example, one should look no more than the international meetings or
interviews, nearlly all political leaders choose to wear business suits. However, it's also a time when national characteristic are respected and preserved, for one case is that national features are paid more attention to and merged into contemporary fashions by the artists.

To sum up, the outward appearance is the most vivid and fresh image records of a society, a country, and a era. It has its unique way of write down every change of the history. Hence it's a reasonable and effective way to comprehend a society's ideas and values by looking through its people's dressing manners.
