题目:ISSUE40 - "Scholars and researchers should not be concerned with whether their work makes a contribution to the larger society. It is more important that they pursue their individual interests, however unusual or idiosyncratic those interests may seem."

In the modern educational system, interest is an essential topic which is emphasized in recent decades. As is well concerned, if one has interests on something, he/she could make devotion on it, which could be well done. However, one's interests can not be converted by others, which means, his/her interests may be noting to other people. So the question rises, should scholars and researches pursue their individual interests or not?
Interest is the best teacher. For scholars and researchers, interest is the paramount impetus of research. Without it, we could hardly enjoy the luxurious and convenient modern life brought about by achievements in science---achievements motivated by interest. By confirming their research to beneficial social contributions, scholars and scientists might lack the inspiration of personal interest. Thus great innovation might be dismissed in a apathetic neglect. One example is the distinct difference between the achievement of doctorate and post-doctorate students. The difficulty of the research are equal, however, the former are eager to accomplish their research, and make a lot of effort; while the later often feel gloomy about their work and have a great stress jet achieve little. What is the reason? Because the doctorate students choose the subjective for themselves, while the post-doctorate students are ordered to accomplish the subject, which means they actually have no interest on it.
What scientists are pursuing is to explore the unknown frontiers of the world, which means scientists themselves are also not very sure what they would discover, so no mention what impact on society their discoveries will have. Actually, most discoveries were born by accidents, or were the byproducts in the process of other research. Marie Curie did not well prepared and intentionally decided to discovery the element of radium. However, it is true that what she discovered not only crowned her with Nobel Prize, but also enormously contributed to our society.
However, the pursuit of individual interests by scholars and researchers should not consist of treacherous and evil interests that may damage the well-being of individuals or society as a whole. There still are conventions, regulations, moral and ethic commitments that scientists must obey. The world famous scientist Edward Teller is disputed from time to time. This man persuaded the US government to research for the dreadful atomic bomb, which later became a threat to all of the countries which do not have atomic bombs. He took charge of the research of hydrogen bomb, and debate in the American Congress for the ban on nuclear experiment, which is beneficial for all the human beings. He is considered as the craziest scientist, and the world will become better if he never exists.
In sum, interest is great beneficial to the research of science and technology, it makes the development much faster than ever, and bring much comfortable on human life. However, we must suspect the evil interest of some person, through the number of it is little. Thus, we could enjoy the convenient of interest and avoid the defect of it.
